Shelter Cove Marina, located at 18 Simmons Road on Hilton Head Island, is a testament to transformative vision and maritime spirit. Since its inception in the early 1980s, this marina has evolved from a mere harbor into a vibrant hub of activity. The creation of Shelter Cove involved the removal of over 600,000 cubic yards of sand, reshaping the shoreline and bolstering the beach at Palmetto Dunes.
The first buildings, Harbourside I & II, broke ground in 1982, introducing the innovative concept of “dockominiums” – boat slips with condo-like amenities. The iconic Neptune Statue, unveiled in August 1983, stands as a symbol of the marina’s maritime heritage, its trident doubling as a sundial.
Today, Shelter Cove Marina is a thriving destination, offering dedicated boat slips, Mediterranean-style shops, and restaurants. It is a favorite among both locals and visitors, providing a blend of natural beauty, rich history, and contemporary luxury. This marina stands as a cornerstone of Hilton Head Island’s charm, embodying the island’s historical significance and its evolution into a premier resort destination.
