The 79th Street Boat Basin, a historic marina on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, stands as a testament to New York City’s rich maritime and architectural heritage. Located at 444 W 79th St, this marina has been a cornerstone of Riverside Park since its completion in 1937 as part of the West Side Improvement Project overseen by Robert Moses. Designed by architect Gilmore David Clarke, the basin features a multi-level structure with a rotunda clad in fine-cut stone, supporting a traffic circle and housing a restaurant and underground parking garage.
For decades, the 79th Street Boat Basin has been the only facility in New York City allowing year-round residency on boats, attracting notable figures like Mario Puzo and Frank Sinatra. However, it is currently closed for renovations until 2025, a project funded by the city and FEMA to restore its functional and aesthetic grandeur. This renovation aims to revive the basin’s vibrant community and its unique place in the city’s waterfront history.
