Bahia Honda State Park sits at Mile Marker 37 of the Overseas Highway, where the Florida Keys narrow to their most dramatic and the color of the water shifts from teal to deep sapphire depending on the light. This 524-acre island park, established in 1961, is widely considered one of the finest state parks in Florida, balancing three distinct beaches, exceptional snorkeling, camping, and the haunting silhouette of the Old Bahia Honda Bridge with a level of natural beauty that feels more Caribbean than American.

The old bridge is the park’s most iconic landmark: a 1912 steel railway trestle built as part of Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railroad, later converted to road use and now preserved as a walkable trail that rises above the water to deliver panoramic views of the surrounding keys, sea channels, and both the Atlantic and Gulf sides of the island simultaneously. Beneath the bridge and along the park’s three beaches, the gin-clear water holds excellent snorkeling habitat, with small reef fish, rays, barracuda, and occasional sea turtles visible from the shallow sandy bottom. The park’s concessionaire offers guided snorkeling trips to the nearby Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary, one of the best reef systems in the continental United States, as well as kayak rentals and snorkeling gear.

Bahia Honda works beautifully as a base for a Florida Keys family trip. Calusa Beach, the park’s longest sandy stretch, was rated the top beach in the United States by coastal researcher Stephen Leatherman in 1992 and remains a beloved spot for swimming, sunbathing, and beachcombing. The park is also a notable birding destination on the Florida Keys Birding Trail, with shorebirds, wading birds, hawks during fall migration, and the endangered white-crowned pigeon all documented on the island.

The park offers six duplex waterfront cabins on stilts, each with two bedrooms, a kitchen, central air conditioning, and a porch above the bay. These book up to eleven months in advance, particularly for winter and spring stays. Pets are not permitted in the cabins, but are allowed on a leash throughout most of the park. For pet-friendly travelers or larger groups needing more space, vacation rentals in Big Pine Key and Marathon, the two nearest communities, provide a comfortable range of waterfront condos, pet-friendly cottages, and cozy homes with docks, kayaks, and easy access to the water. Marathon in particular offers luxury waterfront rentals with hot tubs, boat slips, and beautiful Gulf or Atlantic views.

Parking fills quickly on winter and spring weekends; arrive early in the morning for day use. No swimming is permitted in the Bahia Honda Channel on the west end of the park due to strong currents.
