A Townhouse Rental on Watauga Lake Tennessee That Became a Community Anchor
Lilly didn’t just live at the lake—she belonged to it.
From the first day Jennifer and Mike unlocked the door to what would become Lily’s Lake Lookout on Watauga Lake Tennessee, Lily was there like a tiny foreman with four paws. She’d trot room to room as if she was approving the plan, then sprint outside the second she caught a glimpse of water. She had eyes for the lake the way kids have eyes for a playground—laser-focused, full of possibility.
And honestly? That’s how the whole place came to life.
Not with a rigid business plan. Not with a “let’s optimize this for bookings” spreadsheet. With a dog who could swim for hours and somehow made a once outdated, underperforming house feel like it was already halfway to home.

From Coastal Renovations to Watauga Lake Tennessee
Jennifer and Mike’s love for hosting started early in their marriage, when they bought a coastal rental and renovated it together—turning it into a space that felt lived-in (in the best way). Years later, and post-retirement, that same shared instinct pulled them toward a new chapter.
But this time, they weren’t chasing a beach town you can spot on a map in two seconds.
Mike says, “coastal towns are easy to find. Lakes are different. They’re quieter, a little hidden, and more delightful when you discover them—especially if what you want is a safe, secluded space where family memories can happen naturally.”
That search led them to Butler, Tennessee and to Watauga Lake, a mountain reservoir in Northeast Tennessee with a shoreline that still feels tucked away.
The Property Was Outdated and Underperforming—But They Saw the “After”
When they found the home, it wasn’t thriving as a rental.
It was outdated. It was underperforming. But Jennifer and Mike have a long history of seeing what a space could become, and they knew this could be a lakeview rental on Watauga Lake Tennessee that actually felt like a home people could settle into.
So they got to work.
Renovation Timeline: March to June 2024
Renovations took place from March through June 2024, with the goal of making the home feel effortless and welcoming—comfortable enough for families, calm enough for couples, and practical enough for real-life stays.

Jennifer’s Design Philosophy: Build a Space That Helps People Exhale
Jennifer has a background in design, and you can feel it when you enter. Not in a fussy, look-don’t-touch way, but in a “this makes my life easier” way.
The space is set up so people can connect without trying:
A kitchen that’s truly usable (not just photogenic).
Living spaces that invite game nights and long conversations.
Comfort that feels intentional, not accidental.
“In my role as an interior designer, my tagline is ‘Design that reflects YOU.’ As I considered the YOU for this space, I had to consider that “You” would actually be “Y’all,” and as I designed the look, feel and flow, I wanted to consciously create spaces that prioritized friendship, family, connections, love and fond memories. The bones of a great space were in place. The view was spectacular. All I had to do was add the pieces and the color scheme that would top it off!”
A Stop Along the Appalachian Trail: The Kind of Quiet That Stays With You
Here’s one of our favorite nuances of this location: you’re right near the Appalachian Trail.
That matters because the Trail draws a certain kind of guest—people looking for perspective, quiet, and outdoor time that actually resets your brain. Sometimes it’s hikers doing a section. Sometimes it’s families who want a “we need fresh air” weekend. Sometimes it’s couples who just want to wake up and feel like time is slower.
And that’s where Lily’s Lake Lookout on Watauga Lake Tennessee really fits.
After a long day outside, this is the kind of place where you can rinse off, eat something warm, and sit on the porch long enough to remember what your mind sounds like when it isn’t sprinting.
Then Hurricane Helene Hit—and Their Timeline Changed Overnight
Just as the renovations wrapped, Hurricane Helene struck the region on September 27 , 2024, with major impacts across Northeast Tennessee—especially counties including Johnson (where Butler is located).
Helene caused serious flooding and infrastructure disruption in parts of the area, affecting roads, bridges, and everyday life—creating ripple effects that also hit travel and the local rental market.
This is the part of the story that makes Lily’s Lake Lookout feel like more than a listing.
Instead of rushing to welcome guests right away, Jennifer and Mike used their newly renovated lake home to provide shelter for a displaced family – during the early recovery process. Their first booking didn’t happen until the end of 2024 —because rebuilding came first.

Community-First Hosting and Why It’s Woven Into Every Stay
Today, Jennifer and Mike are active in the community and genuinely encouraged by how recovery is taking shape.
One of the best behind-the-scenes details: they hosted the owners of a nearby vineyard while that venture was re-starting —supporting local momentum in a very practical way.
That vineyard is Villa Nove Vineyards in Butler, TN, a mountain vineyard overlooking the Watauga Lake valley, that’s become a destination in its own right (events, tastings, and a big “wow” view).
And they bring that same community energy into the cottage experience through small touches—like keeping the kitchen stocked with local coffee from the Appalachian Coffee Cupboard, so guests feel connected to the area, not separated from it.
Why They Named It After Lilly and Why She’s Still the Heart of the Home
Lilly was part of everything—renovation days, lake breaks, the long recovery stretch, and the everyday moments that built this place into what it is.
Even though Lilly is no longer with them, she’s still the mascot and the mood:
Her lake joy shows up on the coffee mugs.
Her story lives in the guest book.
And the thought of her is basically stitched into the whole idea of the cottage: show up, be present, go outside, and enjoy the simple stuff.
Now there’s Ted—affectionately called “the New Lily”—carrying the tradition forward as the current lake ambassador.
The Behind-the-Scenes Team That Makes Hosting Possible
Jennifer and Mike split time between Maryland and Tennessee, and they’ll tell you straight: a solid team is everything.
They rely on a trusted local partner who keeps the property running smoothly while they’re away—so guests still get consistency, quick support, and a home that’s cared for the way it should be.
Tammie, their local property manager shared “My commitment to the guests is the same as Jennifer’s and Mike’s. I want to provide them with the best experience possible, making sure that we anticipate their needs and create an environment for making memories. I take pride in the preparation and presentation of the property for each and every one of our guests.”

What Guests Feel When They Stay Here
This is why the story lands: Lily’s Lake Lookout isn’t trying to be everything for everyone.
It’s a lakeview cottage rental on Watauga Lake designed for people who want:
- Seclusion without feeling isolated
- Comfort without complication
- A place that invites connection
- A community that feels real, not staged
And if you’ve ever craved a getaway that feels like it has a heartbeat, that’s what Jennifer and Mike have built—one thoughtful choice at a time.
