Adaptive on the Water: Arizona Adaptive Watersports Day at Bartlett Lake
Arizona Adaptive Watersports Day runs May 16–17, 2026, at Bartlett Lake Marina in the Tonto National Forest, with expert-led adaptive waterskiing, wake surfing, kayaking, and tubing for participants of all abilities. Tonto Forest pass required. Family members and observers welcome throughout.
Event details
Bartlett Lake, 48 miles northeast of Phoenix in the Tonto National Forest, gives the Arizona Adaptive Watersports Day its most fundamental asset: a broad, warm, relatively protected body of water accessible to participants with a wide range of physical abilities. The event runs May 16–17, 2026, at Bartlett Lake Marina, with activities designed and staffed specifically for adaptive participation across waterskiing, wake surfing, kayaking, and tubing. Trained instructors manage each activity with specialized equipment calibrated to the participant’s needs, and the event format ensures that the focus is on individual capability and enjoyment rather than competition or comparison.
Bartlett Lake reaches water temperatures in the low to mid-70s Fahrenheit by mid-May, which makes it one of the most accommodating early-season adaptive watersports venues in the Southwest. The Verde River, which feeds the reservoir, runs clear enough through the spring months that water visibility at the lake is consistently good. The Bartlett Lake Marina provides boat launches, basic supplies, and fuel directly on-site. A Tonto National Forest daily pass or Tonto Discovery Pass is required for all vehicles entering the recreation area, regardless of event participation. Parking is available near the marina, with accessible parking designated adjacent to the waterfront activity zones.
Who This Event Is Designed For
Arizona Adaptive Watersports Day is built to serve participants across a broad range of physical conditions: veterans recovering from service-related injuries, individuals with mobility limitations, and anyone for whom standard watersports equipment and instruction create barriers to participation. The event has been described by previous participants as one of the few outdoor recreation opportunities in the state where the adaptive component is genuinely central rather than a side accommodation. Observers and family members are welcome on-site throughout both days, and the lakefront setting accommodates spectators as comfortably as participants.
Good to Know
Pets are welcome at Bartlett Lake on a leash throughout the recreation area, but the marina and active watersports zones require that animals be kept clear of launch and landing areas. Glass is prohibited throughout the Tonto National Forest. Fireworks are strictly prohibited and result in significant fines. The nearest town with full amenities, fuel, and groceries is Carefree, approximately 17 miles southwest on Bartlett Dam Road.
The Verde River and Fort McDowell
Downstream from Bartlett Dam, the Verde River flows through the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation before joining the Salt River system near Fountain Hills. Fort McDowell Adventures offers guided river float trips on sections of the Verde that are inaccessible from public roads, and the Nation’s Harrah’s Ak-Chin casino and resort complex 25 miles south provides a full-amenity lodging option for visitors who prefer a hotel stay to campground access. Theodore Roosevelt Lake, 30 miles east via State Route 88, is the largest lake in Arizona managed under a federal recreation framework and offers a broader range of facilities including a full marina and campgrounds across its 22,000 acres.
Where to Stay
Bartlett Lake’s Tonto National Forest campgrounds offer dispersed camping directly on the reservoir with no advance reservation required, subject to pass fees. For visitors preferring a roof, the Carefree and Cave Creek corridor has vacation rentals and boutique inns within a 25-minute drive of the marina. Look on Lake.com for properties in the North Scottsdale and Cave Creek area that provide a comfortable base for the two-day event and the surrounding Sonoran Desert recreation corridor.
