Athletes swim Auke Lake beneath Juneau’s mountain skyline
Sprint and Olympic triathlon, duathlon, and aquabike divisions combine Auke Lake swimming with cycling and running around Juneau’s scenic university district.
Event details
Aukeman sends athletes into the cold, clear water of Auke Lake before cycling and running through the University of Alaska Southeast campus, with sprint, Olympic-distance, duathlon, and aquabike divisions widening the field well beyond a single type of competitor entirely. Juneau’s mountain skyline frames nearly every leg of the course from the swim start to the final stretch.
Families following a racer will find the lakeside setting easy to navigate, since the swim start and much of the run stay visible from shore, letting younger spectators track a familiar face through multiple stages of the race rather than losing sight of them for long stretches along a hidden course somewhere out of view.
The early start, equipment logistics, and limited road access make a Juneau stay necessary for nearly all visiting athletes and their families. Plan bike transport and packet pickup before arrival, then leave time afterward for Mendenhall Glacier, Auke Bay, or a whale-watching trip once the racing concludes for the day. Spectating is free; registration cost varies by the event chosen.
