Event details

Every Memorial Day weekend, the Bigfork Whitewater Festival turns the Swan River into the focus of Bigfork, Montana, at the north end of Flathead Lake. You watch elite kayakers, rafters, and stand up paddleboarders take on the Wild Mile, a class IV run that drops straight toward Bigfork Bay. From the bank, you get close views of technical racing in fast, cold spring runoff.

You will see slalom competitors thread gates with precise boat control, then shift to pure speed in the downriver races. For spectating, the Swan River Nature Trail parallels the rapids and the historic steel bridge gives a clear angle on the hardest moves. When you step off the trail, downtown keeps things moving with a vendor area near Mill Street and evening meetups at spots like The Garden Bar and Riverview Bar.

Plan your weekend around the main events. Friday opens with Boater X, followed by the Flower Float, and a free community concert often runs at the Sliter Memorial Park stage. Saturday starts with the Lower Slalom and SUP racing in Bigfork Bay, then expert slalom in the afternoon, finishing with a Saturday night dance party. Sunday brings the raft head to head heats and Giant Slalom, then the awards ceremony at The Garden Bar at 6:00 PM.

Arrive early to claim space on the nature trail or bridge during the expert races, and pack for Montana spring swings with waterproof layers, sturdy shoes, and high SPF sunscreen. Spectating is free, but bring cash for raffle tickets and food vendors; if the riverfront feels full, you can reset in the shops and galleries downtown or grab a bay view table. Keep children and pets close near the banks, currents and water levels can be dangerous during runoff. Stay in Bigfork village or along the north shore of Flathead Lake for easy access, or base in Whitefish or Kalispell and drive in; we also often see visitors use Lake.com to compare regional rentals. The festival runs rain or shine, races only pause if conditions become unsafe, and most competitions offer amateur divisions if you register and have the skills for class IV water.
