Chain O’Lakes celebrates the season with firefly magic
Learn about Indiana’s state insect and catch-and-release fireflies at Chain O’Lakes State Park during this summer night program.
Event details
Chain O’Lakes State Park’s Nature’s Fireworks program on the evening of July 5th offers something that the Fourth of July’s standard holiday calendar almost never schedules: a guided natural science experience timed to the peak of Indiana’s firefly season, set within one of the state’s most water-rich park environments.
The $7 program takes place at the Campground Interpretive Area, 2355 East 75 South in Albion, at 9:00 p.m., featuring a naturalist-led exploration of how fireflies use bioluminescence before participants head out with jars to catch and release the insects.
The program’s simplicity is its strength.
Chain O’Lakes and Its Waters
Chain O’Lakes State Park encompasses eight natural lakes connected by channels, set within 2,678 acres of wetland, forest, and prairie, and the park’s paddling trail system connecting the lakes is one of the most extensive and ecologically interesting canoe and kayak routes in Indiana’s state park system.
The firefly program uses this watery, reedy landscape to maximum advantage, as the meadow and wetland edges where the chain’s lakes meet the surrounding forest produce the densest firefly concentrations in the park.
Renting a canoe or kayak through the park’s concession for a morning paddle through the connecting channels before the evening program gives families a complete day that moves from the water by daylight to the water’s edge after dark.
Things To Do for Families
The town of Albion’s Noble County Courthouse Square, a compact example of a classic Indiana county seat with a Greek Revival courthouse, is worth a brief stop for families driving through on the way to the park.
The Stroh Covered Bridge, a historic 1860 example in the surrounding Noble County countryside, is one of several covered bridges accessible within a short drive of the park for families interested in Indiana’s agricultural architectural heritage.
Fort Wayne, about 35 miles south, provides a full urban cultural complement to the park weekend with the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, the Children’s Zoo, and the Botanical Conservatory all within a single city campus.
Dining Near Albion
The Wooden Nickel Restaurant on West Main Street in Albion is the community’s most dependable casual dining address, with a broad American menu and the reliable lunch and dinner service that small-town restaurants of its type sustain across multiple generations of local patronage.
For a more destination-driven meal, Conjure Coffee and Kitchen in Fort Wayne on East State Street is one of the city’s most celebrated breakfast and lunch addresses, with a rotating seasonal menu that makes the drive’s modest inconvenience worthwhile.
Where to Stay
Chain O’Lakes State Park’s campground system, distributed across wooded sites adjacent to the lake channels, is the most immediate base for the firefly program and gives families direct morning access to the park’s paddling routes.
Book your stay near Chain O’Lakes on Lake.com and plan a July 5th that uses the park’s interconnected water system through the daylight hours before the evening naturalizes the holiday spectacle into something the park itself provides.
