Young Anglers Take the Line: The IBF Youth North Trail Opens on Lake Shafer
The Indiana Bass Federation Youth Trail (North) opens April 18, 2026, at Lake Shafer’s Kuhn DNR Ramp in Monticello with the Junior Only Barbee Chain event. Season runs through September 19 across five Indiana fisheries. Register through the Indiana Bass Federation.
Event details
The Indiana Bass Federation Youth Trail (North) is not a single event but a season-long progression through five of the state’s most productive freshwater fisheries, designed to give young anglers genuine competitive experience in a format that the recreational day trip simply cannot replicate. The 2026 season opens April 18 at the Kuhn DNR Ramp on Lake Shafer in Monticello for the Junior Only Barbee Chain event, then moves through the following schedule: the St. Joe River at Prickett Marina Ramp on May 16, Lake Manitou at the DNR Ramp on July 11, the Barbee Chain again at Kuhn DNR Ramp on August 15, and Lake Wawasee at the Syracuse DNR Ramp on September 19. Each event begins at 7:00 AM and concludes by early afternoon. Registration is through the Indiana Bass Federation’s official channels.
The season opener at Lake Shafer frames what the trail stands for. The lake covers 1,350 acres along the Tippecanoe River in White County, formed by Norway Dam in 1924, and holds a population of largemouth and smallmouth bass that rewards patience and local knowledge in roughly equal measure. The lake’s modest development and wooded shoreline make it feel more remote than its proximity to Monticello would suggest. For a young angler casting a line in competition for the first time, there is no better introduction to serious bass water.
The Structure Behind the Competition
The IBF Youth Trail operates within the national B.A.S.S. Nation federation’s youth division framework, meaning that strong finishers across the season accumulate points toward state and regional championship consideration. Anglers compete in age-divided junior and senior brackets. Non-boater spots pair youth without their own boat to registered boater-participants through the federation’s pairing system, keeping entry barriers low without compromising the competitive standard. Safety requirements are firm: a Coast Guard-approved life jacket is required while the vessel is in motion, a rule enforced without exception across all IBF events.
What the trail builds, across five events and six months, is the kind of water reading skill and adaptability that separates experienced anglers from skilled ones. Each lake on the schedule fishes differently. The St. Joe River rewards current knowledge. Lake Wawasee’s clear glacial water demands finesse presentations that would not work on the more turbid Tippecanoe watershed lakes. Competing across all five is its own education.
> Good to Know
> The Kuhn DNR Ramp on Lake Shafer offers reliable concrete launch access with adequate trailer parking for tournament mornings. Arrive at least 45 minutes before the 7:00 AM launch to stage gear and complete any registration requirements. April mornings on Lake Shafer can run cold through the 40s; a wind layer and warm base are essential for the pre-dawn preparation period.
Beyond the Tournament: Indiana Beach and the Monticello Shoreline
Monticello has anchored lake tourism in White County since Indiana Beach Amusement Resort opened on Lake Shafer’s eastern shore in 1926, making it one of Indiana’s longest-continuously-operating lakeside attractions. Indiana Beach typically opens for the season around Memorial Day, so the April opener weekend will find the town in its quieter pre-season mode, with the state recreation area around Norway Dam offering accessible shoreline walking and informal fishing spots for families who want to extend the morning beyond the weigh-in.
> If You’re Going With Kids
> Non-competing siblings can fish informally from the shoreline near the Kuhn Ramp during tournament hours, as the ramp area is a public access point. Bring a simple rod-and-reel setup and a carton of worms; the informal bank fishing around the ramp has a long, pleasant history among families attending morning IBF events.
