Chilkat Challenge Triathlon

Every Memorial Day weekend, The Chilkat Challenge Triathlon turns the river valley of Haines, Alaska into a point to point course built around real wilderness travel. You start at Mosquito Lake and move through the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, linking three legs in one continuous push: paddle, road bike, then run. You can race solo or split the work in a relay team, so you can bring your competitive edge or a group plan.

Your day begins with a 9:00 AM launch, so plan to be at the Mosquito Lake start line at least an hour early for check in and clean gear transitions. You paddle from the lake into the Chilkat River, then shift to a road ride through the preserve where eagle sightings are common. The final run tracks you toward the river mouth and finishes at the Letnikof Cove Pavilion.

Expect a focused, energetic atmosphere with minimal on course services. Registration is $75 and includes the post race celebration, and you should sign up early since equipment rentals can be limited in town. Dress in synthetic, moisture wicking layers for fast weather swings, carry a reusable bottle and high energy snacks, and coordinate a support vehicle or teammates to move paddle and bike gear between transition zones. After you cross the line, the community gathers by the water at Letnikof Cove, and we usually see racers drift into Haines breweries or take a waterfront walk as a cool down.
