Event details

Flags for Fort Snelling Volunteer Flag Placement Weekend is a direct, hands-on way to begin the holiday in the Twin Cities. You will join hundreds of volunteers at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis to place an American flag at every headstone. As the work progresses, the rolling grounds shift into a broad field of red, white, and blue, a clear visual tribute to those who served. Families, friends, and individuals are all welcome.

You can sign up for morning or afternoon shifts, depending on the day, and you will be assigned a section so the coverage stays orderly. The tone is focused and respectful as you move row by row through the cemetery. The most striking moment comes Sunday afternoon, when the final flags go in and the entire cemetery is fully covered. There are no formal performances; the shared act of service is the point.

Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early for check-in and a brief orientation. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for Minnesota spring conditions, including sun protection and rain gear. Pre-registration is required through the official website, and popular shift times can fill quickly. Use designated parking near the entrance and allow extra time for traffic; bring a reusable water bottle, since you will cover a lot of ground.

If you are coming from out of town, stay in Bloomington or near the Minneapolis airport for quick access. For a quieter base, consider a lake-area vacation rental through Lake.com. Participation is free, with donations accepted to help maintain and replace flags. Pets are generally not permitted inside the national cemetery, and the placement typically proceeds rain or shine, so arrive prepared.
