Downtown blooms as flags and baskets are installed
Kick off summer as volunteers install bright flower baskets and flags along Sherman Avenue—turning downtown Coeur d’Alene into a colorful, walkable garden.
Event details
One of North Idaho’s most-photographed transitions happens in late May, when downtown Coeur d’Alene’s historic lampposts bloom overnight with 80+ hanging baskets and signature flags. The installation crew works early morning, transforming Sherman Avenue into a canopy of color by mid-afternoon, signaling the unofficial start of lakeside summer.
You won’t find a formal schedule (it depends on weather and nursery timing), but locals watch for the telltale bucket trucks around Memorial Day weekend. The best photo ops cluster near City Park and the Sherman Avenue/Lakeside Avenue intersection, where baskets frame lake views in the background. Come mid-morning for softer light, grab coffee at Java on Sherman (open since 2004), and spend an hour wandering the newly dressed-up storefronts.
Make it a seasonal escape by booking a week on Lake.com during the transition from spring to summer, when the water is warming, boat rentals are opening for the year, and the Centennial Trail is dry enough for early morning runs. You’ll catch Coeur d’Alene at its most optimistic, when the whole town leans into long days and outdoor dining returns to the waterfront patios.
