Event details

The Fort Richardson National Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony gives you a quiet, dignified way to honor fallen service members in Anchorage. Held at midday on Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson with the Chugach foothills in view, it offers a calmer alternative to larger city events. You will join veterans, families, and visitors who come to pay respects in an orderly setting built for remembrance.

You can expect the ceremony to open with patriotic music and move into a formal program of speakers and ceremonial selections. The tone stays solemn throughout, with attention on those interred here, including a cenotaph dedicated to Japanese soldiers. Seating and sightlines fill quickly near the main podium, so plan your arrival accordingly.

Because this takes place on an active military installation, base access and protocol shape the day. We recommend reaching the base gates 60 to 90 minutes early for security processing, and bring a valid government issued photo ID plus vehicle registration and proof of insurance. If you do not have a military ID, stop first at the Richardson Visitor Control Center at the D Street gate for a visitor pass, then proceed to the cemetery. Follow the posted directions for D Street since GPS can route drivers toward Otter Lake, and note that entry may pause during key moments if you arrive late.

Dress for changeable late May weather with layers and comfortable walking shoes, and pack a rain shell or umbrella. For convenient access, consider lodging in the Tikahtnu or Government Hill neighborhoods. Attendance is free, and pets are generally not permitted during the formal ceremony unless they are service animals.
