Event details

Every October, Marktplatz transforms into Bavaria under the Texas Hill Country sky as Fredericksburg celebrates its German heritage with three days of oompah music, beer steins, and lederhosen-clad dancing. Held October 2-4, 2026, this 45-year tradition runs Friday 6 p.m. to midnight, Saturday 10 a.m. to midnight, and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Marktplatz (100 block of West Main Street). Admission is $15 for adults for one day, $20 for two days, and $25 for all three days (kids 7-12 pay $1-$3 depending on days, ages 6 and under free). The festival features five covered stages hosting continuous performances from German bands like Happy Hour OktoberfestBand (direct from Germany), Jodie Mikula Orchestra, and Texas favorites like Seven Dutchmen and Walburg Boys. Presented by the Pedernales Creative Arts Alliance, all proceeds fund college scholarships for Gillespie County students studying the arts.

Families with kids, couples seeking authentic German culture, and anyone who loves polka, waltz, and outdoor festivals will find this irresistible. Beyond the music, you’ll find over 50 varieties of German, American, and Texas craft beers on tap, plus wine from local Hill Country vineyards. Food vendors serve bratwurst, potato pancakes, schnitzel, sauerkraut, and strudel alongside festival favorites like funnel cakes and turkey legs. Special events include the Friday night Altstadt Waltz Contest, Saturday’s Kraut Run (5K benefiting literacy programs), the Hauptstrasse Chicken Dance, and Sunday’s 42 Domino Tournament and Family Dirndl and Lederhosen Contest. Kids enjoy jumping castles, face painting, and games in the Kinderpark area. Parking is limited around Marktplatz, so use the Park & Ride shuttle service from Gillespie County Fairgrounds ($10 per person, kids 6 and under free) running Friday 5:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. with shuttles every 30 minutes.

Early October in Fredericksburg brings mild days (75-85°F) and cool evenings (55-65°F), perfect for outdoor eating and dancing. Dress comfortably for standing and bring cash or cards (both accepted at ticket booths throughout the festival grounds). The festival runs rain or shine under covered tents, and no outside food, drinks, or pets are allowed (service animals only). Extend your weekend by pairing Oktoberfest with morning hikes at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area (40 minutes west) or afternoon paddles on Canyon Lake or Lake Marble Falls. Lake.com has vacation rentals near both lakes, giving you a quiet retreat after festival hours and easy access to Hill Country wineries, swimming holes, and scenic drives through the Pedernales River valley.
