A lakeside parade honoring service at RMNP’s gateway
Watch a patriotic parade down Grand Avenue, then stay for the Town Park ceremony with flyover and flag tribute in charming Grand Lake.
Event details
Located on the western edge of Rocky Mountain National Park, the Grand Lake Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony brings you into a classic Colorado mountain town morning, with Grand Avenue framed by snow-capped peaks and the state’s largest natural lake. You’ll start the day curbside as veterans, military families, horses, and local service organizations move through the village in a patriotic procession toward Town Park.
Plan to be on Grand Avenue by 9:30 AM for the best view before the 10:00 AM start. At 8,300 feet, late-May mornings can feel brisk, so dress in layers and keep sunscreen and water on hand for the high-altitude sun. Parking in the center fills quickly, so you’ll have an easier time walking from your lodging or parking on the edge of the business district.
After the parade, you’ll head to Town Park for a formal remembrance ceremony with remarks from Grand County Veterans and the American Legion, plus live music and, in many years, a military aircraft flyover. The tone stays respectful and community-focused, giving you space to reflect before the summer season picks up. The event is open to everyone, held rain or shine, and the park offers a few shaded spots under the pines.
For the smoothest weekend, stay in a lakefront lodge or cabin within Grand Lake village so you can walk to the route and park. If you want a quieter base, consider rentals near Shadow Mountain Lake through Lake.com, which also sets you up well for national park trails after the ceremony. If you’re bringing a dog, leashed pets are common along the route, and if you want to join the parade, contact Grand Lake Town Hall or the Events Manager to register in advance.
