Haines raises a glass for Alaska’s iconic Beerfest
Kick off Memorial Day weekend with a brewers’ dinner and tastings at the Southeast Alaska State Fairgrounds, backed by the Chilkat Mountains.
Event details
Over Memorial Day weekend, The Great Alaska Craft Beer & Home Brew Festival draws a dedicated crowd to the Southeast Alaska State Fairgrounds in Haines. You come for regional pours from brewers across Alaska and the Yukon Territory, with the Chilkat Mountains and the Lynn Canal as the setting. Expect a focused tasting event supported by live music, local food vendors, and lawn games.
Your weekend starts Friday night with the Gourmet Brewers’ Dinner, then shifts to the main tasting on Saturday. If you want first access to limited selections, book the Saturday Connoisseur Hour before general admission begins. Tickets for the dinner and Connoisseur Hour often sell out weeks ahead, so plan early.
On Saturday, arrive at least 30 minutes before your entry time to clear the ID check and lines. Bring a reusable water bottle and dress for variable Southeast Alaska weather, including waterproof layers. Parking near the fairgrounds is limited, so consider local shuttles or a taxi.
For a comfortable base, you can stay at a historic hotel downtown, camp near the Chilkat River, or book a rental in Mud Bay or Lutak if you want more space or water views. If the festival sells out, check Haines taprooms, which often host smaller satellite events throughout the weekend. Good to know: tasting portions are strictly 21+, and you must show a valid government-issued ID at the gate.
