Event details

History of Camp Floyd Day brings Utah’s frontier military past into focus at Camp Floyd State Park Museum in Fairfield, southwest of Salt Lake City in Cedar Valley. Held on Memorial Day, it spotlights the 1858 to 1861 window when the nation’s largest concentration of U.S. troops was stationed here. You can tour the original Stagecoach Inn, then move through exhibits that trace the daily routines of soldiers and civilians working the edge of the American West.

Outdoors, you get the day’s main draw: live demonstrations with musket volleys and vintage cannon fire that carry across the high desert. Reenactors in period-correct uniforms keep the camp environment grounded in detail, and you will see how units operated in this terrain. The site’s Pony Express role comes through clearly, too, with context on why this stop mattered on the route.

Plan to arrive by 10:00 AM if you want the first cannon firing and easier parking close to the entrance. Bring a wide-brimmed hat and plenty of water since shade is limited, and consider ear protection for small children since the reports are loud. Admission is $5 per person, and if the grounds feel busy, we recommend taking a short detour to the historic cemetery down the road or driving up to nearby mountain overlooks for broad valley views.

Rain usually does not stop the program unless conditions turn severe. Leashed pets are welcome in outdoor areas, but loud musket and cannon fire may spook them. Food options in Fairfield are limited, so pack a picnic for the park tables, and if you are staying overnight, look to Lehi or American Fork for the most lodging variety, or choose a quieter vacation rental in rural Utah County.
