Lakeside triathlon weekend with serious spectator energy
Cheer athletes as they swim Lake Coeur d’Alene, bike scenic North Idaho roads, and run through downtown to a lively waterfront finish.
Event details
Lake Coeur d’Alene’s north shore turns into an athletic theater each June when IRONMAN 70.3 brings 2,000+ triathletes to town for a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike loop through the Palouse hills, and a 13.1-mile run that finishes downtown. Even if you’re not racing, the event creates an electric weekend: the swim start happens off City Beach around 7 a.m., bike athletes roll through downtown in waves until early afternoon, and the run course loops McEuen Park and Sherman Avenue with finish-line celebrations stretching into evening.
Best spectator spots include City Beach for the swim exit (arrive by 6:45 a.m.), the Sherman Avenue/Lakeside intersection for bike turnarounds (peak action 9-11 a.m.), and the finish line at McEuen Park (busiest 11 a.m.-2 p.m.). The course stays open until 5:30 p.m., so you can cheer early finishers and still catch the emotional back-of-pack crossings. June weather usually delivers 65-80°F conditions, but mountain storms can roll through, so bring layers and rain gear for all-day spectating.
Book a lakefront stay through Lake.com well in advance (rentals near the race route fill up by March), and build a full weekend around the event: rent kayaks Saturday afternoon when the course clears, hike Tubbs Hill Sunday morning, or cruise to one of the quieter north-shore beaches for post-race recovery time. The celebratory energy spills into downtown restaurants all weekend, making it one of Coeur d’Alene’s liveliest summer kickoffs.
