Event details

The Lake Lure Memorial Day Program brings a focused, reverent energy to the edge of the Blue Ridge foothills. You will gather at the Lake Lure Veterans Memorial, directly across from Lake Lure Beach, with still water and granite peaks setting a quiet, fitting backdrop. Families, veterans, and local residents come for a traditional tribute that keeps the attention where it belongs: honoring those who lost their lives in service.

You can expect a formal posting of colors by the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Honor Guard, patriotic music, and a community-led program that often includes local students leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Guest speakers may include regional clergy and retired military leaders, including past appearances by Colonel Ernest Beall, offering reflections on duty and sacrifice. Near the close, the 24 notes of Taps carry across the Hickory Nut Gorge, followed by a final prayer.

Plan to arrive by 8:45 AM to get seated before the 9:00 AM start. The ceremony is held rain or shine, with inclement weather moving the program indoors to Roosevelt Hall at the 1927 Lake Lure Inn. Mornings by the lake can run cool even in late May, so bring a light jacket, and use public parking near the beach and the Arcade Building for the easiest access.

After the ceremony, many attendees stay for a continental breakfast, often hosted at the historic 1927 Lake Lure Inn. For the closest access, book a room at the 1927 Lake Lure Inn and Spa; for a resort-style weekend, consider Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure, and check its holiday schedule for additional activities. The program is free and open to the public, the memorial area is flat with paved walkways, and while the grounds are public, you should leave pets at home given the solemn tone and potential crowds.
