Marina del Rey sparkles with fireworks over the harbor
See a 20-minute July 4 fireworks show over Marina del Rey’s Main Channel, with harbor, beach, and waterfront viewing all around.
Event details
Marina del Rey’s Fourth of July fireworks show is the most understated and in some ways the most satisfying Independence Day celebration in the Los Angeles basin. Launched above the Main Channel at 9:00 p.m. on July 4th and running approximately 20 minutes, the display is compact by California standards but exceptionally well-positioned: the harbor’s enclosed geometry focuses the reflections off the channel water and the surrounding boat slips in a way that gives the show a visual intimacy that the larger coastal displays, spread across open ocean or a broad bay, cannot offer. Burton W. Chace Park at 13650 Mindanao Way is the primary public gathering point, with waterfront lawn space along the channel and consistent sightlines to the fireworks launch. Admission is free.
The Harbor and the Surrounding Coast
Marina del Rey is the largest man-made small-craft harbor in the United States, with more than 5,000 boat slips and a waterfront promenade that connects the marina to the broader coastal path running north toward Venice and south toward Playa del Rey. The Fourth of July weekend draws a crowd that fills the harbor’s restaurant patios, the channel-side walking paths, and the boat decks of anyone lucky enough to be aboard for the evening. Dockweiler Beach, a few minutes south of the marina, is one of the few Los Angeles County beaches where bonfires are permitted, and the combination of a bonfire on the sand and the visible Marina del Rey fireworks overhead makes for one of the more distinctive July 4th evenings available anywhere on the Los Angeles coastline. Venice Beach, immediately north, is at its most festive on the holiday weekend, with the boardwalk performers and street market in full summer mode through the afternoon.
Timing and Practical Notes
Burton W. Chace Park fills steadily from 7:00 p.m., and arriving by that time secures a comfortable lawn position. The park is fully accessible with paved paths throughout and ample space for strollers and families with young children. Metered street parking along Mindanao Way and in the surrounding marina neighborhood is the most common arrival approach, and it fills from 6:00 p.m. onward. The Culver City and Santa Monica bus lines serve the marina area and are a practical alternative for visitors staying nearby. July temperatures in Marina del Rey average in the mid-70s Fahrenheit during the afternoon, dropping to the mid-60s by fireworks time with a consistent marine layer rolling in from the Pacific, so a light layer for the evening is worth keeping on hand.
Dining at the Marina
Café del Rey on Admiralty Way has occupied its position overlooking the marina since 1990 and remains one of the most refined waterfront dining addresses in Los Angeles, with a seasonal California menu and a dining room that captures the harbor’s best sightlines. Reservations on July 4th fill quickly. Fisherman’s Village at the south end of the marina is a more casual waterfront complex with multiple dining options, including The Warehouse Restaurant, which has been a marina landmark since 1969 with a nautical-themed dining room and waterfront deck suitable for a holiday evening meal before the show. C&O Trattoria on Washington Boulevard in Marina del Rey, open since 1991, is the neighborhood’s most beloved Italian restaurant and a reliable, unhurried dinner option for those who prefer to eat before the crowds descend on the waterfront.
Where to Stay
Marina del Rey’s bay-side hotels and vacation rental properties sit within walking distance of the fireworks and the harbor promenade, with the added benefit of proximity to both Venice Beach and the broader Santa Monica Bay. Book your stay near Marina del Rey on Lake.com and spend the morning on the water before settling into one of Los Angeles’s most relaxed holiday evenings.
