A mountain Memorial Day ceremony in Black Mountain
Join the annual ceremony at Western North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, a hillside setting east of Asheville and close to the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Event details
The Memorial Day Ceremony at Western North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, just east of Asheville, gives you a focused way to observe the holiday. You will be on cemetery grounds with the Blue Ridge Mountains as the backdrop, joining local officials, the state of North Carolina, and veterans organizations in honoring U.S. military personnel who died in service. After the program, you can continue your day with a drive to nearby Blue Ridge Parkway overlooks.
You can expect a formal morning program with a keynote speaker, often a senior military leader or a representative from the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. One of the defining moments is a series of selected readings presented by the veteran writing group Brothers and Sisters Like These. Flags are placed at each grave, creating a clear visual tribute across the hillside.
Plan to arrive by 9:30 AM so you have time to park, walk to the main ceremony area, and settle in before the 10:00 AM start. This is outdoors in a mountain climate, so check the forecast and bring a light jacket or umbrella since conditions can change quickly. If you cannot attend, we often see a recording shared later in the afternoon through the City of Asheville’s official channels.
If you are traveling in, you can stay in Black Mountain for small inns and local rentals, or choose downtown Asheville for easy access to restaurants and galleries after the ceremony. The event is free and open to the public, rain or shine. Children are welcome, but you will want to set expectations for a quiet, respectful setting, and it is best to leave dogs at home during the ceremony.
