Event details

Trade crowded Memorial Day plans for three days on the Upper Missouri River Breaks, paddling a calm current through Montana’s White Cliffs region on a guided canoe trip with Lewis & Clark Trail Adventures. You launch from Fort Benton and travel a storied stretch of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, where pale Eagle sandstone walls rise above the water and the river does most of the work. We handle the canoes, camp setup, and meals, so you can stay focused on the landscape and the history.

Your days are built around an easy pace that works for first-timers and experienced paddlers alike, with time for short walks off the river. Expect slot canyons such as Neat Coulee, petroglyph stops, and chances to spot bighorn sheep, bald eagles, and pronghorn on the breaks. You camp at established sites with deep provenance, including Eagle Creek and Slaughter River, and guides share context on geology, wildlife, and expedition-era river travel around the evening fire.

Plan to meet at the outfitter headquarters in Fort Benton by 8:30 AM on day one to load dry bags and get oriented. Pack layers, since late-spring conditions can swing from 30 to 100 degrees, and bring a good camera plus binoculars for long views along the cliffs. All necessary river gear is provided, including Wenonah canoes and life jackets, and the trip is suitable for ages two to ninety.

Cell service is limited to nonexistent along the corridor, and the trip runs in most weather, with guides tracking conditions and advising on rain gear. Basic BLM toilet systems are available at established camps. On Monday afternoon, you return to Fort Benton by shuttle, and many guests choose to book the historic Grand Union Hotel the night before launch, with additional regional hotels and vacation rentals available if you prefer extra time in town.
