Outdoor cinema under the stars at Leif Erikson Park
Join Movies in the Park at Leif Erikson Park in Duluth for free outdoor screenings of classics like Wicked and Harry Potter every Friday at sunset from July 11 to August 29
Event details
Every Friday evening from July 10 through August 28, 2026, Leif Erikson Park on Duluth’s Lake Superior waterfront becomes one of the most quietly extraordinary outdoor cinema venues in the country. The Greater Downtown Council’s Movies in the Park series projects a community-voted film on a large outdoor screen as the sun drops behind the city’s hillside, with Lake Superior spreading to the horizon in front of the audience — a body of water large enough to produce its own weather, its own light, and its own particular quality of silence between the waves. Eight films screen across eight Friday evenings at no charge. All of them are family-friendly, rated PG or PG-13, and chosen by public vote from a curated pool of options. The 2025 season, as a reference point, included “Wicked,” “The Parent Trap,” “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” The 2026 selections will be announced after the April 17 community vote closes at the Downtown Duluth Facebook page.
Everything That Makes This Work
Leif Erikson Park sits at 1301 London Road, directly on Highway 61 along the Lake Superior waterfront, with the great lake as the literal backdrop to the screen. Films begin at sunset, typically between 8:30 and 9:00 PM depending on the date — the season runs from midsummer into late August, and the extra light of the early screenings creates a long, gradual dusk that Duluth summers do with particular beauty. Concessions are available on-site. The park grounds are spacious enough to spread out comfortably; arrive by 7:30 PM on popular nights to secure the best central lawn position. Leashed dogs are welcome and are a consistent part of the atmosphere — the combination of well-behaved dogs, blanket-covered families, and Superior’s edge air makes the whole experience feel more like a community gathering than a programming event. Alcohol is not permitted in the park; coolers and bags may be checked at the gates. All attendees under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Light rain does not cancel the screening; check DowntownDuluth.com for any weather updates on the day of the film.
Duluth Beyond the Screen
Duluth rewards visitors who spend a full weekend around any given Friday film. Canal Park, a ten-minute walk from Leif Erikson Park, is the city’s most active waterfront district: the aerial lift bridge opens dozens of times daily to pass ore ships and recreational vessels, and the viewing platform at the Canal Park Marine Museum tracks each ship’s identity and cargo in real time. The Great Lakes Aquarium, the only all-freshwater aquarium in the United States, sits adjacent to Canal Park and is one of the better family science destinations in the Upper Midwest — the lake sturgeon tank, with specimens that can live past 150 years, is the one exhibit that consistently stops children mid-step and holds them. For dinner before or after the film, Zeitgeist Arts Café on First Street has been the cultural anchor restaurant of Duluth’s arts community for years, known for its rotating seasonal menu built around Upper Midwest sourcing; the wild rice cakes and the lake trout dishes are the ones most closely tied to the regional landscape. The Duluth Grill on West Superior Street does a reliable farm-to-table diner format that accommodates families with ease and serves breakfast all day — the walleye fish cakes and the buttermilk pancakes with locally sourced maple syrup are the reasons regulars return specifically.
If You’re Bringing Pets
Leif Erikson Park is one of Duluth’s most dog-welcoming public spaces. Bring a leash, a water bowl, and a blanket. The park’s lawn is wide enough that well-behaved dogs rarely conflict with surrounding blanket spreads, even on busy evenings. Clean up after your pet — enforcement is courteous but consistent.
Rain Plan: Light rain runs through most screenings; bring a packable rain jacket and a waterproof tarp for your blanket. Only lightning or severe weather cancels the film. Updates post to DowntownDuluth.com by 6 PM on screening evenings.
Lake Superior Waterfront Stays on Lake.com
Duluth sits at the westernmost tip of Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake by surface area in the world, and the waterfront rental inventory along the Minnesota North Shore — from Duluth northeast through Two Harbors, Beaver Bay, and Silver Bay — represents some of the most distinctive lake accommodation in the country. Search Lake Superior and the Minnesota North Shore on Lake.com for properties that position you for a full week of Friday film screenings, weekend hiking in the Superior National Forest, and early morning fog watching over the big lake.
