Event details

The New Orleans Greek Festival returns each Memorial Day weekend at Holy Trinity Cathedral and the Hellenic Cultural Center on Bayou St. John. You come for classic Greek cooking served straight from the outdoor grills, plus a bakery line that rewards early decisions, and you stay for an easygoing afternoon by the water with live music as your backdrop.

Plan to eat your way across the grounds: gyros and souvlaki for something savory, then honeyed pastries like baklava and galaktoboureko while they last. Between bites, you can browse a marketplace of imported icons, jewelry, and Mediterranean groceries, then drift back to the main stage where the Hellenic Dancers perform in traditional dress throughout the weekend.

We recommend setting aside time for a guided tour of Holy Trinity Cathedral, the oldest Greek Orthodox church in the United States, with an interior that is worth seeing up close. The festival is rain or shine, with many dining and performance areas under large tents, and the final evening typically builds toward a crowd-wide dance floor as the music continues.

For the smoothest visit, arrive early Friday evening for bayou views before Saturday’s peak, and wear comfortable shoes for the grassy grounds plus a hat for afternoon sun. Tickets are usually about $10 for adults, with kids 12 and under often free; most booths take cards, but some cash helps at smaller stations. Use the RTA streetcar or a ride-share since nearby parking is tight, and keep in mind the event is family-friendly with an Athenian Playground for kids, while pets are generally not allowed inside the cathedral grounds. If you are staying nearby, Mid-City and Bayou St. John keep you close, and rentals near City Park or the lakefront offer a quieter base.
