Midway lights and horse-show tradition in Simcoe
Experience the Norfolk County Fair & Horse Show in Simcoe with rides, agriculture exhibits, and grandstand events—one of Ontario’s iconic fall fairs.
Event details
Ontario’s oldest agricultural fair returns to Simcoe for its 185th year on October 6 to 12, 2026, bringing seven days of Thanksgiving tradition to Norfolk County Fairgrounds.
With over 15,000 competition entries spanning equine events, livestock, poultry, giant pumpkins, homecraft, photography, and art, this fair draws 115,000 visitors annually and ranks among Ontario’s Top 100 Festivals alongside the CNE and Royal Winter Fair. Daily admission runs $13 in advance, $15 at the gate, with a weekly pass at $60, and kids 12 and under get in free.
The outdoor horse show is Canada’s largest, featuring dressage, jumping, and rodeo competitions throughout the week. Motorsports fill the grandstands for five days with demolition derbies, truck pulls, and racing events, while evening concerts bring top tribute bands and country acts to the main stage. The midway lights up with rides, Ride All Day passes $40, games, and that unmistakable fair-food aroma of corn dogs, funnel cakes, and fresh-cut fries.
Young Canada Day, typically Friday, pits area high schools against each other in track events, tug-of-war, and spirit competitions, with schools decorating grandstand sections in their colors and earning points for sportsmanship.
Plan to arrive early on weekends for easier parking and lighter crowds at the livestock barns, where you can watch dairy cattle judging, sheep shearing demonstrations, and poultry exhibitions. The indoor market showcases local artisans, and the agricultural exhibits feature prize-winning vegetables including pumpkins pushing 1,000+ pounds.
After a full day on the fairgrounds, head into downtown Simcoe, founded 1795, for dinner at The Blue Elephant, opened as a craft brew house supporting local produce, or grab classic diner fare at The Barrel Restaurant, a local favorite since the mid-20th century.
Norfolk County sits just 5 miles north of Lake Erie, making it easy to combine fair days with beach time at Port Dover or Long Point Provincial Park. The Boat House Restaurant in Port Dover, serving beachfront classics since the 1960s, offers lake views and fresh perch dinners, while Knechtel Foods, a Port Dover institution, serves their famous perch snack box with a lakeside buffet included.
Book a Lake Erie cottage through Lake.com for the full week so you can hit the fair one day, beach the next, and enjoy Thanksgiving dinner with a water view. The fair always runs from the Tuesday before Thanksgiving through Thanksgiving Monday, so you’re guaranteed a long weekend to explore.
Simcoe’s compact fairgrounds put everything within walking distance once you park, and free shuttles run from overflow lots during peak times. This is old-school Ontario agriculture meeting modern entertainment, and the perfect excuse for a lakeside Thanksgiving getaway in Norfolk County.
