A rainforest marathon on Alaska’s island edge
Run from Craig High School through Prince of Wales Island scenery, with ocean air, forest roads, and a friendly small-town finish line party.
Event details
The Prince of Wales Island Marathon delivers a calm counterpoint to the busy Memorial Day marathon circuit. You run on quiet, paved roads in and around Craig, where dense rainforest meets open shoreline and the air carries spruce and salt. The start and event hub is Craig High School, then the route heads into the island interior with frequent coastal glimpses.
You can choose a full marathon or half marathon, and the field stays small enough that your day feels personal rather than anonymous. Water stations and the finish area are run by locals, and the tone is welcoming and efficient. Plan for a straightforward race morning and a relaxed finish, often capped with a harborside meal in Craig where runners and walkers trade notes from the course.
Arrive at Craig High School at least 45 minutes before the 8:00 AM start for check-in and prep. Entry is $55, and registering early helps secure your spot. Pack layers plus waterproof gear, bring your own preferred nutrition, and remember the course is open to traffic, so you need to stay alert on the shoulder.
For race-weekend lodging, Craig and nearby Klawock are your primary bases, with local inns and lodges that also serve anglers. If you want more privacy, you can book a regional vacation rental on Lake.com for a quieter home base near the water. The race runs rain or shine, and you generally have up to eight hours to finish, but pets are typically not allowed on the course for safety.
