Event details

The Ranger-led Snowshoe Walks at Rocky Mountain National Park, often affectionately referred to by locals and repeat attendees as the Winter Snowshoe Treks or Snowshoe Explorations, are a captivating winter adventure that invites participants to immerse themselves in the pristine beauty of the Colorado wilderness.

This event is tailored for a diverse range of enthusiasts, including families with children aged 8 and older, nature lovers, and those who relish the tranquility and challenge of winter landscapes. The programs are designed to be family-friendly, making them an ideal activity for parents looking to introduce their children to the joys of snowshoeing and outdoor exploration. No previous snowshoe experience is necessary, as these walks are open to all skill levels, including beginners.

The Ranger-led Snowshoe Walks take place from January 6 through March 17, with scheduled walks occurring every Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park, near the charming town of Grand Lake, Colorado. For those interested in attending the east side programs, these are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:30 p.m., starting from January 9 and continuing through March 28.

The west side programs, located near Grand Lake, are a 3.5-hour drive from Estes Park, offering a serene and undisrupted winter wonderland experience. Grand Lake, nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, is accessible via US Highway 34, and the nearest airport is the Denver International Airport, from which one can rent a car or take public transportation to reach the park.

The setting of these snowshoe walks is nothing short of breathtaking. Participants will traverse through hilly, uneven, snow-covered meadows and mixed conifer forest areas, elevations ranging from 8,700 to 9,300 feet. The landscape is dotted with snow-clad trees, frozen streams, and an occasional glimpse of wildlife, creating a magical backdrop for an unforgettable winter journey.

What makes these walks truly special is the unique blend of physical activity, educational content, and the serene beauty of nature. Led by knowledgeable park rangers, these two-hour programs offer more than just a physical challenge; they provide an opportunity to learn about the local flora and fauna, the park’s ecosystem, and the history of the area. Participants will gain insights into the plants and wildlife that thrive in these harsh yet beautiful conditions, adding a layer of depth to their exploration.

The atmosphere is one of camaraderie and exploration, with a limit of 20 participants per program ensuring an intimate and personalized experience. The moderately strenuous nature of the walks encourages participants to push their limits while enjoying the serene tranquility of the winter landscape.

To attend, participants must make advance reservations, which are free though park entrance fees still apply. It is crucial to dress appropriately, with water-resistant hiking boots or snow boots, layered clothing, hats, and gloves being essential due to the high elevations and potential cold.

The Ranger-led Snowshoe Walks at Rocky Mountain National Park offer a singular winter experience that combines adventure, education, and the unspoiled beauty of nature. Whether you are a seasoned snowshoer or a curious newcomer to winter sports, this event promises to leave you with lasting memories of a winter wonderland and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
