Carson City’s rib cook-off launches summer weekend
Four days of championship ribs, live bands, and craft brews at Casino Fandango, an easy hop from Lake Tahoe and the Carson River.
Event details
Over Memorial Day weekend, The Rockin’ Ribfest at Casino Fandango makes Carson City a go-to stop for serious barbecue. You spend four days at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, watching national champion pitmasters compete while you sample their work. The festival takes place on the top floor of the casino’s parking garage, where hickory smoke, open-air seating, and wide views of the surrounding peaks set the scene. If you are pairing food with sightseeing, you are also a short drive from Lake Tahoe’s east shore.
Your main mission is the championship rib cook-off, with teams such as Carson City BBQ and Awesome Aussie Australian BBQ serving ribs, sides, and bottles of signature sauce. Between tastings, you can browse artisan crafts and vendor stalls, then settle near the stage for a steady rotation of live music. The beer garden is reserved for guests 21 and over, but the grounds are all-ages, so families and groups can spread out and keep everyone fed and entertained.
Plan around the daily rhythm: Friday and Saturday typically run 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with headlining bands later in the afternoon. Sunday brings official judging, when the experts award honors like Best Ribs and Best Sauce. Monday is your final chance to make the rounds for one more plate and a set or two, with festivities wrapping earlier at 5:00 PM.
Arrive before noon if you want easier seating near the stage and shorter food lines, especially at dinner. Admission is free, and you can reserve VIP rib tables ahead of time for guaranteed seating. Bring a hat and high-SPF sunscreen since the rooftop offers limited shade, and consider parking in the movie theater back lots for a quicker walk to the entrance; late-afternoon winds can pick up, so check the forecast. For maximum convenience, stay on-site at Casino Fandango or nearby in southern Carson City, or we can make it a Tahoe trip by booking a lakeside cabin or regional rental through Lake.com.
