Event details

Alaska’s second oldest fishing tournament opens for its 71st consecutive year on August 8, 2026, running nine days through August 16 in the waters of Resurrection Bay off Seward. The Seward Silver Salmon Derby, managed by the Seward Chamber of Commerce since 1956, draws anglers from across Alaska, the lower 48, and international ports to compete for a prize pool exceeding $250,000 — topped by a $10,000 cash grand prize for the heaviest silver salmon of the tournament, plus a prize equal to the winning fish’s weight in Kaladi Brothers Coffee. Catch one of the ten specially tagged silvers swimming the bay and you could walk away with up to $20,000. This is not a weekend family scramble. It is a week-long competitive fishery event in one of the most productive salmon bays in the world, and it rewards the angler who puts in the time.

How the Derby Runs

Registration is handled at Derby Headquarters in Seward Harbor, directly across from the B-Dock fish cleaning station, with evening early-bird sign-up beginning the Friday before the first Saturday of the tournament. Entry costs $10 per day or $50 for the full nine-day tournament. You must hold a valid derby ticket before your line enters the water — no exceptions, and weigh-in judges check. Fish are weighed daily at headquarters from 6 AM to 9 PM, with the final Sunday closing at noon. All weighed fish must be presented fresh, whole, and uncut; they become property of the derby upon submission and can be bought back for $5 at time of weigh-in only. A valid Alaska Department of Fish and Game sport fishing license is required for any adult angler. Beyond the overall standings, prize categories include the heaviest daily fish by men, women, and youth divisions; random daily drawings; the Mystery Weight Prize for matching the day’s secret target weight; and non-motorized specialty categories honoring the heaviest silver caught from shore, kayak, or sailboat. Side betting pools — six tiers ranging from $10 to $250 — allow participants to wager on their own fish against the pool. The $5 “Guess the Winning Weight” pool is open to non-anglers. The awards ceremony for the 2025 edition was held at Tidewater Taphouse on Port Avenue; confirm the 2026 ceremony location at seward.com/salmon-derby.

Resurrection Bay and the Town of Seward

Seward sits at the head of Resurrection Bay, a fjord-style inlet surrounded by the Kenai Mountains and drained by glaciers still visible from the harbor. The Exit Glacier, twelve miles north on the Seward Highway, is among the most accessible glacier walks in Alaska — the trail system ranges from a flat valley walk to an upper ridge climb with direct views of the ice face, and the National Park Service interpretive markers along the lower trail document ice retreat with enough specificity to hold older children’s attention for the full loop. The Alaska SeaLife Center on Railway Avenue is the only public aquarium in Alaska and the state’s primary marine research facility; its steller sea lion and harbor seal exhibits are genuinely large-scale, and the puffin colony in the seabird aviary is a consistent crowd anchor for families. For dinner, The Cookery on Fourth Avenue has been one of Seward’s most respected kitchens for years, with a menu built on locally sourced Alaskan seafood; the halibut fish tacos and the Resurrection Bay clam chowder made with Kachemak Bay clams are the two dishes that regulars specifically return for. If you want a more direct post-derby meal, Chinooks Waterfront Restaurant on the harbor serves grilled and pan-seared salmon preparations that treat the fish as the centerpiece rather than an afterthought — appropriate on a week when your entire focus has been on pulling them from the water.

Practical Notes for Derby Week

Seward fills during the derby. Book lodging at least three months in advance — peak accommodation in the harbor district goes quickly, and the surrounding Kenai Peninsula lake and river corridor adds alternative options for those willing to drive. Charter fishing operations include Miller’s Landing, Latitude 60 Marine, CrackerJack’s, and Graylight Fishing, all of whom offer Pro category derby participation through the 2026 season; book your charter days through their sites and register for the derby using the captain’s promo code. Anglers may fish inside or outside Resurrection Bay, but bag and possession limits differ between the two zones — read Alaska Department of Fish and Game regulations carefully before launching outside the bay. Weather in Resurrection Bay in August can produce short-notice wind, chop, and fog; dress for marine conditions regardless of morning forecasts.

Quick Tips
– Register before you fish. Judges will disqualify any catch from an unregistered angler, regardless of weight.
– The tagged fish jackpot is rare but real. Ten tagged silvers are released before the derby opens each year. Their prize values vary year to year — confirm the 2026 structure at seward.com/salmon-derby.
– The awards ceremony draws the full derby community. Plan your departure to allow attendance on the final Sunday afternoon.

Stay on Resurrection Bay on Lake.com

The greater Seward and Kenai Peninsula region offers waterfront cabin and lodge rental options along Resurrection Bay and the surrounding freshwater lake network. Search Seward and Kenai Peninsula waterfront options on Lake.com to find a base for the full derby week, and consider extending your stay into the days before or after to take full advantage of the bay’s salmon and halibut fishery outside of competitive hours.
