Coho anglers crowd Resurrection Bay for Seward’s historic derby
One of Alaska’s oldest and largest fishing derbies brings nine days of salmon competition, daily excitement, and a $10,000 top prize to Seward.
Event details
Nine days of coho fishing fill Resurrection Bay during the Seward Silver Salmon Derby, one of Alaska’s oldest and largest, where boats fan out from the harbor each morning and daily weigh-ins build steadily toward a $10,000 prize for the winning fish caught during the derby’s run. Anglers travel from across the state and beyond to take part in the long-running tradition.
The derby’s extended run gives families flexibility that a single-day tournament can’t offer: a fishing morning that comes up empty still leaves several more days to try again, with harbor walks, wildlife viewing, and the Alaska SeaLife Center filling the hours between outings for anyone not out on the water that particular morning.
Daily entry begins at $10, while longer ticket options reach $50. Charter bookings, boat slips, and lodging should be arranged well ahead of the August dates, since this remains one of Seward’s busiest stretches of the entire summer season. Stay several nights to absorb weather delays, and add a Kenai Fjords cruise for days when the fish aren’t cooperating.
