Event details
Embark on a journey through history and nature at the Survivors & Heroes River Expedition, honoring the courageous Stephens-Townsend-Murphy Party who traversed the Sierra Nevada in 1844. This five-day adventure, from September 29 to October 3, 2025, begins at Donner Memorial State Park in Truckee, California, and concludes in Auburn, covering 120 miles of breathtaking landscapes.
The expedition follows the ancient Native American trade route from the Truckee River confluence near Donner Lake, south to Lake Tahoe, over Burton Pass at 7,140 feet, through the Rubicon and American River watersheds, descending nearly 6,000 feet to the Sacramento Valley. Along the way, participants will experience the rugged beauty of the Sierra Nevada mountains, the serene waters of Donner Lake, and the rich history of the region.
Families, history enthusiasts, and adventure seekers alike will find joy in this unique blend of education and exploration. The event culminates with a presentation at the Donner Memorial State Park Visitor Center on October 4, where the History Expeditions team will share their experiences and insights. Doors open at 5 pm, with the presentation starting at 5:30 pm. Admission is a suggested $5 donation, and light refreshments and wine sponsored by Highway 12 Winery will be available.
