Event details

On February 7, 2026, more than 20 downtown Coeur d’Alene locations will open their doors for The Chocolate Affair, a four-hour walking tour that pairs gourmet chocolates with wine along Sherman Avenue. Running from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, this annual event, organized by the Coeur d’Alene Downtown Association, transforms the lakefront shopping district into an interactive tasting trail, with each participating business offering a signature chocolate creation.

Tickets sell out quickly, so advance purchase through Eventeny is essential. The event coincides with the Coeur d’Alene Resort Food and Wine Festival (February 7-9), making this weekend one of the region’s most popular winter culinary destinations.

What your ticket includes and how the tasting trail works

After checking in at Resort Plaza Shops (210 E Sherman Avenue) between 1:30 and 5:00 PM, you’ll receive a wristband and an event map marking all participating locations. For Wine & Chocolate ticket holders (21+), you also receive a commemorative wine glass with eight tasting tokens.

The Chocolate Only ticket costs $30 (plus $2.21 processing), while the Wine & Chocolate upgrade runs $40 (plus $2.84 processing). Each ticket entitles you to one gourmet chocolate sample at every participating shop, boutique, and gallery along the route, and additional wine tokens can be purchased at check-in.

You’ll also cast a ballot for your favorite creation in the People’s Choice competition, with local chocolatiers vying for the Chocolatier Master Award.

The event, founded around 2010-2012, has grown from a simple downtown shopping promotion into a structured competition featuring professional and amateur confectioners. Past winners include Dandelion Bakery in the professional division and Mrs. Honeypeeps in the non-professional category.

Expect an eclectic range of offerings: huckleberry truffles, dark chocolate bark, chocolate whipped mousse (some topped with bacon), pot de crème, cake bites, and chocolate-covered doughnut bites served on kebab sticks for fountain dipping.

Local chocolatier Hermine Sittel-Kubista, the German-born owner of Hermine’s Old World Confections (in business since 1988), is known for authentic marzipan and award-winning truffles, while Tim and Edena Yeager at Coeur d’Alene Chocolates (412 E. Sherman Ave., Suite 105, founded 2009) have earned Best Chocolates honors in the Best of North Idaho Readers’ Survey.

Sherman Avenue’s direct path to Lake Coeur d’Alene

What makes The Chocolate Affair exceptional for a Lake.com audience is its setting along Sherman Avenue, which terminates directly at Lake Coeur d’Alene and Independence Point. The main tasting route spans approximately half a mile between Lakeside Avenue and 7th Street, with the lake visible from the avenue’s western end.

Between chocolate stops, you can walk to the world’s longest floating boardwalk (0.75 miles) at The Coeur d’Alene Resort, stroll through McEuen Park’s 20-acre waterfront promenade, or warm up at waterfront lounges like Whispers, which offers heated igloos overlooking the lake.

February is peak bald eagle watching season on Lake Coeur d’Alene, and charter cruises from Lake Coeur d’Alene Cruises operate eagle-viewing tours through the month.

For overnight visitors, The Coeur d’Alene Resort (115 S 2nd Street) was named Newsweek’s #1 Waterfront Hotel in the 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards. The 18-story property sits directly on the lake with rates starting around $133 per night and includes access to the floating boardwalk, indoor and outdoor heated pools, and multiple restaurants.

Beverly’s, the resort’s seventh-floor fine dining room, features panoramic lake views and the Pacific Northwest’s largest wine cellar. Closer to Sherman Avenue’s center, One Lakeside Hotel (201 N. First Street) offers boutique suites with full kitchens just 0.16 miles from the waterfront. Budget-conscious visitors will find Resort City Inn on historic Sherman Avenue, with rooms from $98 per night and a nine-minute walk to the lake.

Weather, parking, and timing your visit

February in Coeur d’Alene has average highs of 35-38°F and lows of 20-22°F, with snowfall occurring on approximately 14 days. Layered clothing is essential: a thermal base layer, a fleece mid-layer, and a waterproof outer jacket with waterproof boots will keep you comfortable as you walk between indoor tasting locations.

Under the city’s winter parking policy, Saturday parking is free with no time limit from Labor Day through Memorial Day, making February 7 an ideal day for downtown exploration. The Downtown Parking Garage (318 E. Coeur d’Alene Avenue) offers the first two hours free, then $1 per hour, while McEuen Parking Lot charges $1 hourly and accepts the Call to Park app.

Crowds tend to be heaviest in the first hour after doors open at 2:00 PM. For a more relaxed experience and better photo opportunities along the lake, arrive after 3:30 PM when the initial rush subsides. Late afternoon light also creates stunning reflections on the water from Independence Point and the floating boardwalk.
