Event details

Silver Lake Sand Dunes presents a landscape that Lake Michigan’s eastern shoreline produces nowhere else along its length: a 2,000-acre dunefield of active sand in constant slow migration toward the lake, its crests and hollows reshaping annually in a process that renders last year’s maps approximate and this year’s exploration genuinely open-ended. On Saturday, July 4, 2026, Thunder Over the Dunes launches its fireworks display at approximately 10:30 p.m. over this extraordinary terrain at 1765 North Lakeview Drive in Mears, where the combination of open sky, dune silhouette, and nearby lake gives the show a visual context unavailable at any conventional municipal venue. Admission is free. The show concludes by approximately 11 p.m.

The Dunes as the Day
Silver Lake State Park divides the dunefield between its ORV-designated zone to the north, where licensed off-road vehicles climb the active sand under permit, and its non-motorized access areas to the south, where hikers and swimmers reach Lake Michigan through dune corridors that deliver the lake with the dramatic suddenness of a curtain drawn aside. Mac Wood’s Dune Rides, operating since 1930 on the dunefield’s eastern edge, conducts guided dune buggy tours across the active sand in a format that earns its longevity from the landscape’s inexhaustible photographic generosity. Families with children for whom a moving vehicle on a sand landscape requires no further justification will find the 35-minute ride among Michigan’s most reliably satisfying family excursions.

The Silver Lake Village Context
The Silver Lake village commercial strip along Hazel Road maintains the cheerful commercial density of a destination that has been serving summer visitors since the ORV culture and the beach culture arrived simultaneously and decided to coexist. The adjacent Little Sable Point Lighthouse, three miles south on Lake Michigan’s shoreline within Silver Lake State Park, stands 107 feet above the beach in unrestored yellow brick and is accessible by a short walk from the park’s southern parking area. The lighthouse’s isolation from surrounding development gives it a degree of coastal authenticity that the more celebrated Sleeping Bear Dunes lighthouse, 60 miles north, no longer achieves with comparable ease.

Where to Eat
Bortell’s Fisheries on South Shore Drive in Mears has operated a commercial fish market and fry operation since 1945, and the smoked chubs, whitefish, and lake perch available across the counter represent both the freshest and the most historically continuous fishery retail experience on Michigan’s western shore. The fried perch platter, served with hand-cut fries and house-made coleslaw at picnic tables overlooking Silver Lake, requires no embellishment and tolerates none. For a more complete dinner option, the Silver Lake Bar and Grill on Hazel Road handles the summer crowd with a broader American menu and an outdoor deck that faces the dune horizon the fireworks will shortly illuminate.
