Authors, readings, and desert stories in 29 Palms
A desert book festival in Twentynine Palms featuring author talks, readings, and community events—timed for crisp October skies near Joshua Tree.
Event details
The Twentynine Palms Book Festival in 2026 will be a three-day literary celebration in California’s Mojave Desert, typically held in early November. Organized by Desert General Bookstore, this free festival features 90+ authors across multiple genres, with panel discussions, readings, and book signings at venues throughout downtown Twentynine Palms and surrounding areas.
The 2026 edition focuses on four core themes: Stargazing Literature (inspired by the region’s dark skies), Native American Heritage Stories, Memoirs & Personal Narratives, and Romance Fiction.
New for 2026 is Desert Noir, a pre-festival industry day connecting noir fiction authors with screenwriters, filmmakers, and producers interested in adapting desert stories for film.
Events take place at iconic venues like the 29 Palms Inn, Sky’s The Limit Observatory, the Old Schoolhouse Museum, and Freedom Plaza. The festival has become a significant cultural event for the high desert region, drawing both local and out-of-town audiences while celebrating the desert’s rich literary heritage.
