Event details

Join us for the Valdez Kid’s Pink Salmon Derby, a cherished annual event that brings families, friends, and young anglers together for a day of fishing, fun, and community spirit. Set against the stunning backdrop of Valdez, Alaska, this event invites children aged 5 to 16 to experience the thrill of catching pink salmon in the pristine waters of Prince William Sound. The day is filled with excitement as kids compete in four age divisions—5 to 7, 8 to 10, 11 to 13, and 14 to 16—with each division offering a $100 cash prize and two fishing poles.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, July 19, 2026, in Valdez, Alaska. Participants can pick up a free Valdez Fish Derbies hat at the weigh-in station between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. After receiving their hats, young anglers can head out to catch a pink salmon, take a memorable photo displaying their fish alongside the hat, and upload the photo by midnight that same day for a chance to win prizes. The excitement doesn’t end there; prize distribution will occur on Sunday, July 20, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the weigh-in station. To amplify the thrill, KVAK Radio will broadcast a live Kids Derby Radio Show from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on July 19, where young participants will have the chance to call in and win extra rewards, including a grand prize of 10 pounds of jelly beans.

This event is perfect for families looking to introduce their children to the joys of fishing, fostering a sense of community and adventure. To ensure you and your child have the best experience, make sure to pack some essentials. Bring snacks and drinks to keep everyone energized throughout the day.

Familiarize your child with the basics of fishing and encourage them to practice casting if they haven’t fished before. Investing time in preparation can help make the derby day even more enjoyable.
