Cardboard boats, lake breezes, and festival fun
Enjoy a full waterfront festival with vendors and live music, then cheer the Cardboard Boat Regatta as brave crews race handmade boats on Seneca Lake.
Event details
On Father’s Day weekend, June 20, 2026, from 11 AM to 7 PM, Seneca Harbor Park in Watkins Glen transforms into a celebration of lake culture and creative engineering. The Waterfront Festival brings together local artisans, food vendors, and musicians for a full day of shoreline festivities, culminating in the beloved Cardboard Boat Regatta where crews pilot homemade vessels across Seneca Lake’s waters. Admission is free, and families arrive early to claim spots near the dock where the best regatta viewing unfolds. Parking fills quickly by noon, so consider the municipal lots on Franklin Street or arrive via the Seneca Lake Wine Trail shuttle if you’re making a weekend of it.
Seneca Lake, the deepest of the Finger Lakes at 618 feet, has anchored Watkins Glen’s identity since the village incorporated in 1842. The harbor itself was modernized in the 1990s with a brick pier and public green space, creating the kind of waterfront access that makes events like this possible. Between vendor browsing and boat races, walk south along the pier to Clute Park, where you can watch sailboats tack across the lake or simply sit with an ice cream while kids play in the spray fountain.
The regatta typically features 20 to 30 boats in categories ranging from “Most Creative” to “Captain Goes Down With The Ship,” and watching cardboard contraptions either triumph or spectacularly sink has become a Father’s Day tradition for local families and summer visitors alike. Past winners have included everything from pirate ships to oversized swans. Live music runs throughout the afternoon on the main stage, with local acts performing Americana, classic rock, and family-friendly folk. If the weather turns, the covered pavilion offers shelter, and most vendors accept cards, though bring cash for the smaller craft booths.
For dinner after the festival, head to Dano’s Heuriger on Seneca Lake Wine Trail, a family-run spot since 2007 serving Austrian-inspired dishes and Finger Lakes wines on a patio overlooking the vineyards. If you’re staying the weekend, book a lakefront rental through Lake.com in the Watkins Glen or Burdett area, where you’ll have morning access to quiet coves and evening sunsets that stretch long into June.
