Chargeback

Chargeback is a noun and consumer protection mechanism introduced in the United States through the Fair Credit Billing Act of 1974, which gave credit card holders the right to dispute transactions and receive refunds directly from their issuing bank when a charge was unauthorized, fraudulent, or the result of a merchant’s failure to deliver what was promised. In banking software and merchant dashboards it sometimes appears as “disputed charge” or “payment reversal,” but chargeback remains the standard industry term. A confirmed transaction or a merchant-initiated refund represents the opposite outcome.

The process begins when a guest contacts their bank rather than the host or platform to contest a charge. The bank temporarily withdraws the disputed funds from the merchant’s account while investigating the claim. If a guest disputes a $1,200 stay by claiming they never checked in, the host must respond with evidence, digital key access logs, signed rental agreements, or security footage, to demonstrate the stay occurred. Winning a chargeback dispute requires documentation prepared well before the dispute arrives.

A category called friendly fraud complicates this further. It occurs when a guest completes a stay and then disputes the charge anyway, exploiting the consumer protection system to obtain a refund they are not entitled to. Hosts have limited recourse unless they have maintained thorough records.

Beyond the reversed funds, chargebacks typically carry administrative fees regardless of outcome, which is why prevention matters as much as dispute management. Clear cancellation policies, secure payment systems, and thorough pre-arrival documentation all reduce chargeback exposure.
