Gamage Shipyard, situated at 6 Gamage Dr, South Bristol, ME, stands as a testament to over 150 years of maritime craftsmanship. Founded by brothers Albion and Menzies Gamage in the early 1850s, this historic yard has been a hub for building sturdy and elegant vessels. The Gamage family’s legacy includes the construction of more than 88 sail- and steam-powered boats by the turn of the 20th century, which were sought after locally and as far away as New York and maritime Canada.
Under the helm of Harvey F. Gamage from 1924 to 1976, the shipyard flourished, producing over 288 sailboats, powerboats, draggers, scallopers, and windjammers. During World War II, the yard played a significant role in constructing eight wooden military vessels. Today, after a period of renewal, Gamage Shipyard continues to thrive, combining traditional expertise with modern infrastructure, making it a vibrant and active maritime destination on the Damariscotta River. Its rich history and dedication to fine craftsmanship make it a cherished landmark in Maine’s maritime heritage.
