The South Has More Water
Than You Think
The southeastern United States holds more shoreline, more quiet coves, and more genuinely unhurried lakeside country than most road-trippers ever get around to finding. From the highland lakes of West Virginia’s Monongahela National Forest to the spring-fed rivers threading through the Florida panhandle, this part of the country rewards the traveler who is willing to leave the interstate and follow the water.

Southeast and Gulf Coast
The Southeast’s lake country runs from the highland coves of the Blue Ridge to the cypress swamps of the Louisiana border, and the best of it sits well off the routes most families default to. Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains anchor the eastern end of this road, with Norris Lake, Watts Bar, and Fontana Lake forming a quieter ring of reservoir water around the park’s edges. The Blue Ridge Parkway carries you south through North Carolina’s Lake Lure and the High Country before the road opens into South Carolina’s Upstate, where Lake Jocassee and Lake Keowee sit cold and waterfall-fed in the Blue Ridge foothills near Clemson. West Virginia adds Summersville Lake, set inside a sandstone gorge of sandstone that stops most first-time visitors before they have fully stepped out of the car.
The southern half of this road trades mountain elevation for water that runs warmer and wilder. Arkansas holds the Buffalo National River, the country’s first designated national river, alongside the clear Ozark water of Beaver Lake and Lake Ouachita, which together make a strong case for the cleanest swimming in the South. Oklahoma’s Broken Bow Lake, inside Beavers Bend State Park, has earned its reputation among families who value clear water and dense forest over beach crowds. Florida’s Ocala National Forest, with more than 600 lakes and springs running at a constant 68 degrees, offers freshwater paddling that rivals anything on the coasts. Texas closes the route at Caddo Lake, a Spanish-moss-draped cypress swamp on the Louisiana border that feels genuinely unlike anywhere else in the American South.
