West Coast & Mountains
The West Coast and Mountain lake country stretches from the Pacific edge of Washington down through California’s inland ranges, then climbs east into the wide-open landscapes of the Rockies. Covering some of the most varied water in North America. Washington’s Cascade Mountains set the tone early, with Lake Chelan cutting deep into glacier-carved terrain and smaller alpine lakes scattered between forest and ridgeline. Oregon continues the pattern with Crater Lake, impossibly blue and set inside a volcanic caldera, before the route drops into Northern California, where Lake Tahoe anchors the Sierra Nevada with clear water and high-altitude shoreline that stays cool even in peak summer. Further south, Shasta Lake and the surrounding Trinity Alps offer a quieter alternative, where houseboats and long, winding inlets replace the busier resort towns.
As the route moves inland, the scale shifts but the sense of space only grows. Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene Lake and the surrounding panhandle forests feel both accessible and remote, while Montana’s Flathead Lake—one of the largest natural freshwater lakes in the West—sits just below Glacier National Park, reflecting peaks that still hold snow well into summer. Wyoming adds Jackson Lake at the base of the Tetons, where wildlife sightings are as common as boat traffic, and Colorado rounds out the region with high-country reservoirs like Grand Lake and Dillon Reservoir, where mountain air and cold water define the experience. Across this entire stretch, the common thread isn’t just scenery—it’s the feeling that the further you go, the more the landscape opens up, and the easier it becomes to find water that feels entirely your own.
