Eureka Springs honors the fallen in the hills
Attend the community ceremony at American Legion Post 9 on Highway 23, then explore Eureka Springs’ bluff-top viewpoints and historic streets afterward.
Event details
Begin your Memorial Day in Eureka Springs with an hour of focused remembrance at the American Legion Post 9 ceremony on Highway 23, just beyond the historic core. You will join local veterans, residents, and visitors for a traditional program that keeps the holiday’s purpose front and center before you head out to the town’s viewpoints and Victorian streets.
Plan to arrive by 9:45 AM since seating in the post hall can fill quickly. The ceremony begins at 10:00 AM with the presentation of colors by the post color guard, followed by patriotic music from local groups such as the Star Spangled Ensemble and remarks from guest speakers. A POW MIA remembrance table ceremony adds a solemn, specific point of reflection.
The tone is reverent and civic, with moments that land quietly and personally. Many years include the reading of names of local veterans who have passed, and the service typically closes around 11:00 AM with a rifle salute and Taps. The ceremony is held indoors, so it proceeds rain or shine, though you may still want a light jacket and an umbrella for the shifting Ozark weather.
Admission is free and open to the public, with limited on-site parking, so carpooling helps if you are coming as a group. Afterward, we recommend pairing the morning service with a walk through the downtown spring parks or an afternoon at Lake Leatherwood City Park. For your stay, choose a historic hotel or Victorian-era bed and breakfast downtown, or look to cabin rentals and lakeside lodges near Beaver Lake or the White River through Lake.com for a quieter base. The indoor ceremony is best suited for service animals only.
