Event details

The Madison Regatta transforms the Ohio River at Madison, Indiana, into one of the Midwest’s most kinetically thrilling holiday-weekend spectacles, with unlimited hydroplane racing at speeds exceeding 200 miles per hour across a straightaway course set directly in front of the city’s historic riverfront.

The 2026 event runs July 3rd through 5th at the Madison Riverfront and Bicentennial Park at 106 West Vaughn Drive, with H1 Unlimited, Grand Prix, and Pro-Lite hydroplane classes racing across all three days alongside the Roostertail Music Festival in the park.

Grandstand tickets start at $25, and the riverfront’s open layout gives spectators multiple free viewing positions along the bluff and the city’s historic Lower Main Street district.

The Ohio River and the Race

The hydroplane course runs parallel to the Madison waterfront on the Ohio River, with the straightaway positioned close enough to the Kentucky shore that spectators standing on the Indiana bluff watch the boats at eye level through the full course length.

The racing’s audio signature, a flat, percussive roar that arrives a fraction of a second after each boat passes, is one of those sensory experiences that no recorded media adequately prepares visitors for.

The Roostertail Music Festival in Bicentennial Park runs through the evenings of all three days, giving the event a festival infrastructure that keeps the downtown active well beyond race hours.

The Ohio River’s broad width at Madison, nearly a quarter mile across, gives the course room that river-racing events in narrower channels cannot match.

Points of Interest for Families

Madison’s National Historic Landmark District preserves 133 blocks of Federal and Greek Revival residential architecture in one of the Midwest’s most comprehensively intact 19th-century streetscapes.

The Jeremiah Sullivan House on West Second Street, built in 1818 and the state’s oldest documented Federal-style house, and the Shrewsbury-Windle House with its celebrated spiral staircase are both open for guided tours through the holiday weekend.

Clifty Falls State Park, about 2 miles west of downtown on Clifty Drive, offers canyon trails, four waterfalls, and the Clifty Inn’s rim-top views over the Ohio River valley for families who want a morning hike before the afternoon racing begins.

Dining in Madison

Hinkle’s Hamburgers on Broadway Street, Madison’s most beloved dining institution since 1933, serves counter-style hand-formed burgers in a setting that functions as the city’s most accessible and historically authentic meal.

The Red Pepperoni on Broadway is the downtown’s reliable pizza address, with a dining room that fills with race visitors through the holiday weekend.

Madison Vineyards Estate Winery on US-421 holds one of southern Indiana’s most scenic hilltop wine-tasting settings, with Ohio River valley views and a Traminette that reflects the region’s Germanic wine heritage and suits a pre-race afternoon glass well.

Where to Stay

Madison’s historic district bed-and-breakfasts and the Ohio River bluff hotel properties give visitors a range of accommodations within walking distance of the race course and the festival grounds.
