Event details

Moab is not, at first consideration, an obvious destination for a classic car show. The town is known for mountain bikes, sport utility vehicles, and the particular community of travelers who come to prove something against its sandstone terrain. But Swanny Park, the cottonwood-lined green space along the Spanish Trail Road at the heart of downtown Moab, has been hosting the April Action Car Show for long enough to have established its own logic: there is something about placing a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air or a 1968 Dodge Charger against the backdrop of Arches National Park’s salmon-colored fins that feels less incongruous than it should. The vehicles and the landscape share a commitment to a certain kind of American ambition, and the combination works. The 2026 show runs Saturday, April 25, and Sunday, April 26, with free admission for spectators throughout both days.

Saturday begins with a rod run along Highway 128, one of the most consistently praised scenic drives in the American Southwest. The route follows the Colorado River northeast from Moab through a corridor of sandstone walls and cottonwood bottoms before reaching the Castle Valley turnoff, where the La Sal Mountains rise behind a cluster of distinctive monolithic towers that have appeared on more Utah tourism imagery than almost any other landscape in the state. Participants cruise the route in their vehicles, then return to Swanny Park for the show’s official opening at 8:00 AM. Sunday’s rod run heads southwest to Deadhorse Point State Park, where the Colorado River makes a meander visible from the plateau rim 2,000 feet above in a panorama that ranks among the more vertiginous overlooks in the American West.

The Show Itself

The car show at Swanny Park encompasses classic cars, custom builds, and vintage models from multiple eras, with judging categories that accommodate the full range of entries. Live music plays through the show grounds on both days, and local food vendors keep the grounds active between vehicle inspections. Proceeds from the show support local nonprofits including the Moab Free Health Clinic, which gives the weekend an actual civic purpose beyond the automotive. Spectator admission is free for both days.

Good to Know

April in Moab delivers some of the best conditions the desert offers, with daytime temperatures typically in the mid-60s to low 70s and the surrounding canyon country in full spring color before the summer heat arrives. The La Sal Mountains still carry snow at their higher elevations through most of April, providing the kind of contrasting backdrop that makes the canyon landscape look more dramatic, not less. Bring sunscreen and sunglasses even in mild temperatures; the canyon light at this latitude reflects off the sandstone with particular intensity.

Moab’s Water: The Colorado River and Its Canyon

The Colorado River runs through Moab in a way that most visitors underestimate until they are standing on its banks. Whitewater rafting operators in Moab run daily trips on the Colorado from the mild Class II flatwater of the Daily section above town to the technical Class III and IV rapids of Westwater Canyon downstream. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available at several outfitters on the river road, and the morning hours before the car show’s heavy traffic provide ideal conditions for a quiet water experience on the Colorado that most Moab visitors never find time for. Lake Powell, approximately 90 miles south via US-191 and US-89, extends the water itinerary into one of the American West’s most dramatic reservoir landscapes, where the canyon walls the Colorado River carved upstream are replicated at scale in the Glen Canyon formation.

If You’re Going With Kids

The Daily Section of the Colorado River above Moab is appropriate for families with children as young as 5 on rafting trips with most outfitters, who provide child-sized life jackets and provide guides experienced with family groups. Arches National Park, eight miles north of downtown Moab, has a junior ranger program that gives children a structured engagement with the park’s geology and natural history that most parents report as one of the more effective pieces of youth outdoor programming in the national park system.
