Event details

Every first Saturday in December at 6 PM, Main Street transforms into a high-desert holiday spectacle as 50+ illuminated floats roll from Center Street Ball Fields through downtown to Swanny Park, where the evening concludes with complimentary warm meals from Moonflower Cooperative and hot chocolate from Village Market served under the stars. The parade showcases Moab’s distinctive character through illuminated dinosaurs from Moab Giants, Arches and Canyonlands National Park Service entries draped in thousands of twinkling lights, and local businesses creating rolling light shows that feel straight from a holiday film. Santa arrives on the final float while kids line sidewalks filling bags with candy tossed from passing entries, creating the kind of small-town magic that makes December in canyon country surprisingly festive against red rock cliffs.

Arrive 45 minutes early to claim your Main Street viewing spot, with free street parking available throughout downtown. Pre-parade dining at Milt’s Stop & Eat (opened 1954) offers grass-fed burgers at the original Formica counter where John Wayne once sat, while Moab Brewery (founded 1996) serves award-winning Dead Horse Ale alongside house-made gelato for post-parade celebrations. Pasta Jay’s (Moab location since 1992) loads tables with Italian comfort food featuring MaMa Genovese’s family recipes, perfect for warming up after evening festivities. The parade kicks off a full holiday weekend that includes the Tree Lighting ceremony at Swanny Park and craft fairs throughout downtown.

The Colorado River runs directly through Moab, offering family-friendly Class II rafting at Fisher Towers and scenic winter drives along the Upper Colorado River Scenic Byway on Highway 128. Lake Powell lies 275 miles south (4.5 hours through Monument Valley), where houseboating through Glen Canyon and slot canyon exploration provide water-based adventures perfect for extending your holiday weekend into a full winter week. Lake.com features waterfront rentals near both the Colorado River corridor and Lake Powell for travelers who want to combine parade festivities with mornings on calm water and afternoons exploring the red rock landscapes that make southeastern Utah’s holiday season distinctly memorable.
