At the northern tip of Captiva Island, the South Seas Marina stands as a testament to transformative vision and diligent effort. This marina, located at 5400 Plantation Rd, Captiva, FL 33924, has its roots in the late 19th century when George Washington Carter homesteaded the land in 1898. However, it was not until the early 1960s that the property began its metamorphosis into the luxurious resort it is today.
Purchased by Wally Watts in 1961 for $225,000, the South Seas Plantation was revamped with the help of Captiva resident Paul Stahlin and Sanibel resident Ralph Woodring. They dredged a marina and a channel to the Intracoastal Waterway, constructed a nine-hole golf course, and built the Plantation House and employee housing. The marina, now a hub of activity, offers easy access to the waters and has been a central feature since its inception, facilitating boating and water activities that enhance the resort’s allure. As part of the South Seas Island Resort, the marina is a key component of a destination that seamlessly blends natural beauty with luxury amenities.
