Why Rent On High Falls Lake

High Falls Lake is a 650-acre impoundment of the Towaliga River in Monroe, Butts, and Lamar counties, Georgia, just east of Interstate 75 between Macon and Atlanta, adjacent to High Falls State Park. The lake and park share a name with the waterfalls that once powered a small industrial town of sawmills and grist mills in the early 1800s; a later dam flooded the original settlement and created the reservoir, which now falls under the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Today it is operated exclusively for recreation with a 10 HP motor restriction that defines its character — motors over 10 horsepower may not be operated, though they may be mounted. The result is one of the quieter and more productive fishing lakes in central Georgia.

On the water

Largemouth bass fishing is the headline draw, and the statistics are legitimate. Georgia Outdoor News reports nearly a third of the largemouth population exceeds 15 inches, placing it near the top of major reservoirs in the state. Anglers find the most consistent action around downed trees, point bars, the Buck Creek arm, and the Watkin’s Bottom area. The 10 HP restriction limits competition and keeps conditions manageable for kayak and canoe fishers working the timber slowly. Flathead catfish fishing has a remarkable history here: a 53-pound fish set the Georgia state record in 1987, a second broke it again in 1993, and the current lake record stands at 60 pounds. Black and white crappie, hybrid bass, channel catfish, and bream fill out a well-rounded fishery. Fishing is permitted during daylight hours only — no night fishing. High Falls State Park provides two public boat ramps, boat rentals, and a fishing dock. A Georgia fishing licence is required for anglers 16 and older. A ParkPass is required for all vehicles entering the state park; confirm current fees, boat rental availability, and campsite reservations by calling the park at 478-993-3053.

What to do near High Falls Lake

The High Falls waterfalls — the Towaliga River dropping over ancient granite outcrops in a multi-tiered cascade — are accessible via state park hiking trails and are a genuine sight worth the visit independent of the fishing. The park’s three miles of trails connect the waterfall area, the powerhouse below the dam (which provides additional river bank fishing access), and the campground. Jackson, the Butts County seat about 20 minutes from the lake, covers groceries, pharmacies, and the Wellstar Sylvan Grove Hospital. Atlanta is roughly one hour north on I-75; Macon is about 35 miles northwest.

When to go and where to stay

Spring, March through May, is the strongest fishing season — bass spawn from late March through May, crappie peak in early spring near dock posts and brush piles, and flatheads become active as water warms into summer. Summer morning fishing before 9 a.m. is most productive in July and August; the waterfall hike and state park camping draw families through the summer season. Fall, September through November, brings a secondary bass and catfish bite as water cools. High Falls State Park operates six furnished cottages bookable through the Georgia State Parks reservation system and 142 tent and trailer campsites.
