Event details

On January 17, 2026, St. George marks a significant milestone by combining the grand opening of its new $45 million City Hall with the city’s 164th Heritage Day celebration. The free community event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 61 South Main Street (the new City Hall’s address, chosen to honor the 309 founding families who settled in 1861). The day begins with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m., followed by traditional Heritage Day root beer floats served from noon to 2 p.m. inside the new building’s 4,350-square-foot Civic Room. Mayor Jimmie Hughes and City Council members personally serve the floats, continuing a beloved local tradition. Beyond the building tours, Heritage Day activities include free rides on the St. George Carousel, Thunder Junction train, and SunTran bus, plus free admission to the St. George Recreation Center, Sand Hollow Aquatic Center, and St. George Museum of Art throughout the day.

Families with kids, history enthusiasts, and anyone interested in civic architecture and local heritage will enjoy this dual celebration. The new City Hall features expanded council chambers (seating 300, double the previous capacity), a ground-level civic hall designed for exhibitions and public events, and a covered atrium connecting to Historic Town Square. The building sits across from the Historic Tabernacle, Dixie Academy building, and near the original Pioneer Courthouse, placing it at the heart of St. George’s historic district. Arrive by 10:45 a.m. for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, or come anytime between noon and 2 p.m. for root beer floats and building tours. Parking is available in downtown lots and on nearby streets, with additional overflow parking at the new parking structure connected to City Hall via covered walkway.

Mid-January in St. George typically brings mild days (50-60°F) and cool mornings (30s-40s), perfect for outdoor ceremonies and downtown exploring. Dress in layers you can shed as the day warms. Pair this community celebration with exploration of St. George’s historic downtown, including the St. George Museum of Art and walking tours of pioneer-era buildings. The event coincides with the St. George Cultural Tour (January 16-17), offering guided historical tours and artist studio visits for those wanting a deeper cultural experience. After the celebration, drive 15 minutes to Snow Canyon State Park for red-rock hiking, or visit Sand Hollow State Park and Quail Creek State Park for water activities. St. George vacation rentals and hotels provide easy access to both the downtown historic district and the outdoor recreation areas that make Southern Utah famous.
