Lake Hamilton glows with fireworks over the water
Watch Hot Springs light up Lake Hamilton with a free July 4 fireworks display launched from barges and best enjoyed from shore or boat.
Event details
Hot Springs has been drawing visitors to its thermal waters and lakefront scenery for well over a century, and its Fourth of July fireworks display over Lake Hamilton is a natural extension of the city’s long tradition of putting a beautiful setting to good use. Fireworks launch from barges positioned on the lake at the Highway 7 South Bridge at 9:00 p.m. on July 4th, and the show runs approximately 30 minutes over one of the most scenic bodies of water in the Ouachita Mountains. The event is free, and the viewing options are numerous.
Lake Hamilton and the Best Viewing Spots
Lake Hamilton is a warm-water reservoir on the Ouachita River just south of downtown Hot Springs, and the combination of its wooded shoreline, resort hotels, and broad open water surface makes it a particularly strong fireworks backdrop. The Highway 7 South Bridge area and the surrounding lakefront give ground-level spectators a clear view of the barge launches, while boats anchored in the channel turn the water itself into a floating grandstand. Popular land-based viewing positions include the shoreline areas near the bridge, the decks of lakefront restaurants, and the grounds of Bathhouse Row’s surrounding park areas, which offer a slightly elevated perspective over the city. Arriving by 8:00 p.m. secures a comfortable position at any of these spots before the crowds thicken.
The Spa City Before the Show
Hot Springs is a destination with genuine depth beyond its fireworks show. Bathhouse Row on Central Avenue, a stretch of eight historic bathhouses built between 1912 and 1923 and now part of Hot Springs National Park, is worth a morning visit before the holiday evening begins. The Buckstaff Bathhouse, in continuous operation since 1912, is the only bathhouse on the Row still offering traditional thermal bathing services in its original form. Garvan Woodland Gardens on Arkridge Road is another strong pre-show destination, with 210 acres of botanical gardens on the shores of Lake Hamilton that are particularly striking in the long light of a July afternoon.
Dining on the Lake
Fisherman’s Wharf on Lake Hamilton has been one of the city’s most recognized lakefront dining addresses since 1964, with a menu built around catfish, fried shrimp, and Ouachita River seafood served with direct views of the water. Hamilton House Fine Dining on Whispering Pines Road offers a more refined approach to the lakefront dinner with a seasonal menu and wine list that suits a celebratory July 4th evening. For something casual and quick before staking out a fireworks position, the McClard’s Bar-B-Q on Albert Pike Road has been a Hot Springs institution since 1928 and is widely regarded as one of the great barbecue addresses in the state.
Where to Stay
Lake Hamilton’s shoreline is lined with resort hotels, vacation cabins, and waterfront properties that put you within minutes of both the fireworks launch site and the lake itself.
