Event details

Port Carling, the self-proclaimed “Hub of the Lakes,” hosts its annual Winterfest February 20-22, 2026—a weekend passport adventure through Ontario’s most charming lock-side village, where the Indian River connects Lake Muskoka to Lake Rosseau via historic locks that have regulated water traffic since 1871.

Purchase a $5 passport (kids 12 and under free) either in advance or upon arrival, then explore the village at your own pace, hopping between activities that include skating on the Hanna Park skating trail (a winding outdoor rink through the park), horse-drawn carriage rides through snow-covered streets, figure skating demonstrations, children’s entertainment by Jam Sandwich, crazy carpet races down the village hill, and a log sawing contest that tests both strength and technique. The passport grants access to all activities plus special offerings from participating businesses, creating a self-directed festival experience that rewards curiosity.

The Port Carling locks, still operational and maintaining the water levels between Muskoka’s three largest lakes, provide the village’s visual centerpiece. In winter, the frozen channel and dormant lockmaster’s station take on a particularly Canadian stillness, best appreciated during the festival’s quieter morning hours before crowds arrive. The village’s compact downtown clusters around the locks, making everything walkable. For lunch, Portside Fusion (overlooking the locks) serves globally-inspired cuisine with stunning water views—their seared tuna and handmade pasta earn consistent praise. Alternatively, drive 15 minutes to Rosseau for Crossroads Restaurant, an OpenTable Top 100 restaurant (2023-2025) where Chef Richard and Julie Lalonde’s seasonal, locally-sourced cuisine and Lake Rosseau patio views justify the detour.

Port Carling’s motto—”Where Lake Life Begins”—rings truest in winter, when the village sheds its summer tourist veneer and reveals the tight-knit community that has anchored these waterways for 150+ years. Stay at nearby JW Marriott The Rosseau Muskoka Resort & Spa on Lake Rosseau for luxury accommodations, or opt for Muskoka vacation rentals clustered around all three major lakes.
