Event details

Every January, Southern Utah’s red-rock country becomes a four-wheel playground as the Winter 4×4 Jamboree brings hundreds of off-road enthusiasts to the sand dunes, slickrock trails, and canyon routes around Hurricane and St. George. Held January 15-18, 2025 (typically mid-January annually), this four-day event offers more than 35 guided trail rides rated on a 10-point scale from easy graded roads to extreme rock-crawling challenges suitable only for purpose-built rigs. Trails depart from Washington County Fairgrounds in Hurricane (about two hours north of Las Vegas and 4.5 hours south of Salt Lake City), with most routes located within the Sand Mountain Special Recreation Management Area just south of Sand Hollow State Park. Registration is required online at winter4x4jamboree.com, with each trail costing around $50 per run. The event is organized by the nonprofit Desert Roads and Trails Society (Desert RATS) with proceeds benefiting the Utah Public Lands Alliance, Washington County Search and Rescue, and trail maintenance projects.

Jeep, Toyota, Bronco, and buggy owners of all skill levels will find suitable trails here, from gentle scenic routes with Zion National Park views to challenging rock-crawling courses that test vehicle capabilities and driver expertise. Trail leaders and helpers guide each group, ensuring safety and providing local knowledge. Back at the fairgrounds each afternoon, a vendor village showcases 4×4 accessories, gear, and custom builds, with evening activities including live music, radio-controlled car races, bonfires, and access to a heated pool and miniature golf. Arrive prepared with CB radio (strongly recommended for trail communication), safety flags (required for all Sand Mountain trails, minimum 8 feet high), winch and recovery gear for higher-rated trails, and spare parts. No alcohol is allowed on trails or at the fairgrounds. Local lodging options in Hurricane, Washington, and St. George offer event discounts (check the event’s lodging page for arrangements).

Mid-January in Southern Utah brings cool days (50-60°F) and cold nights (30s), with occasional winter storms that can affect trail conditions. Dress in layers, bring sun protection for daytime trail runs, and pack warm clothing for evening activities. Rain or snow may delay specific trails, but the event runs as scheduled with alternative routes available. Extend your Utah adventure by pairing the Jamboree with visits to Snow Canyon State Park (15 minutes from Hurricane), Sand Hollow Reservoir for kayaking or paddleboarding, or Zion National Park (30 minutes northeast). St. George and Hurricane offer numerous vacation rental options and RV parks, including Gateway Luxury RV Park near the fairgrounds, giving you convenient access to both the event and Southern Utah’s outdoor attractions.
