Why Rent On Mooselookmeguntic Lake
Mooselookmeguntic Lake is the largest lake in the Rangeley Lakes Region and one of the finest cold-water fishing destinations in New England, covering 16,300 acres across Franklin and Oxford counties in western Maine. Its Abenaki name translates loosely as “portage to the moose feeding place,” and the lake lives up to every syllable: moose are regularly seen along spruce-fringed shores, landlocked Atlantic salmon and brook trout draw serious fly fishers from across the Northeast, and more than 6,000 acres of shoreline, forest, and islands are protected by the Stephen Phillips Memorial Preserve for low-impact wilderness use. At 1,467 feet above sea level and about 2.5 hours from Portland, the lake is remote enough to feel genuinely wild and accessible enough for a weekend drive.
On the water
Landlocked Atlantic salmon and brook trout are the signature fishery. The Upper Dam Pool, where the lake outlet connects to the Richardson Lake chain, is managed under fly-fishing-only rules with strict bag limits — one salmon of at least 16 inches, catch-and-release only for brook trout — a level of management that reflects the quality the state is protecting. From August 16 through September 30, the main lake opens only to artificial lures and flies with the same daily limits. Check Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife for current season dates and rules before any fishing trip. Personal watercraft are banned on Mooselookmeguntic by state regulation. Motorized boating, kayaking, canoeing, and swimming are all permitted on the main lake. The Stephen Phillips Memorial Preserve manages primitive boat-in campsites on Toothaker Island, Students Island, and the protected shoreline — backcountry sites without amenities, reserved through the Preserve directly. The lake’s elevation means temperatures cool quickly after dark even in July; bring layers for evenings on the water.
What to do near Mooselookmeguntic Lake
The village of Oquossoc on the northwest shore and the town of Rangeley a few miles east provide the nearest services: restaurants, outfitters, general stores, and lodging. Rangeley Lake State Park, a few miles east, adds a public town beach and family activities for days when weather or lake conditions change your plans. The Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway follows Route 16 through the corridor and is one of the most visually rewarding drives in Maine, following the lake chain through spruce forest and open ridgeline country. The Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust manages additional conservation lands accessible for hiking and paddling throughout the region.
When to go and where to stay
Late May through early October is the main season. Salmon fishing peaks in late May and June before summer thermoclines push fish deeper. Fall, mid-September through mid-October, is the most spectacular window: hardwoods turn against the spruce backdrop, salmon feed actively, and boat traffic drops sharply after Labor Day. Winter brings snowmobiling via the Rangeley trail network and ice fishing for brook trout, typically January through March. Lakefront cabins and traditional Maine sporting camps in the Oquossoc and Rangeley area are the primary accommodation; several have operated on the lake for over a century and offer guided fishing alongside the wilderness experience.
